The tiger salamander or the ambystoma tigrinum and commonly know as the eastern tiger salamander is a very interesting specimen. It is know to grow up to 14 inches in length and live up to 15 years the tiger weighs about 4 ounces and is a carnivore. The tiger salamander usually eats worms, insects and frogs. The tiger salamander eats at night when it gets cooler. They are very aggressive when it comes to hunting. Over the past couple of years zoologists have been noticing a decrease in the animals population. Most of the problems the tiger salamanders have been facing are the amount of population and high salt concentration in the animal’s environment. Another reason the tiger salamanders population is starting to decrease is the deforestation that is going on in its environment. Some organizations trying to protect the animal try to warn curtain workers or people of the tiger salamanders breeding areas.
Although this specimen can be found in the northern and southern parts of the United States it is also found in Canada and parts of Mexico Which shows the cold blooded animal has no problem adapting to its environment. The tiger salamander often is found in forests but can also be seen near muddy waters and swaps. Adults are rarely seen in the open they often live in burrows that are usually two feet deep. Tiger salamanders mostly live on land as adults, and usually return to the water to breed. Although the tiger salamander lives on land, they are good swimmers. The chance of a single tiger salamander to breed is only 50%.
