Time management is a phrase that is often heard in today’s society. It seems to be used in school, work, and family life; however, what is time management? “Time management is the act of exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on activities to increase efficiency and productivity” (Singh, 2013). Productivity and efficiency are skills that are highly beneficial in any situation. These skills can help individuals succeed when they correctly use their time. “Time management is one of the most important issues in modern business, because time is one of the major resources for success” (Singh, 2013). Time management is a skill that can be easily attained if a person learns to avoid procrastination and balance their family life.
A common issue with time management is procrastination. When it comes to writing, some may find this task more tedious than others. This can result in a delay to perform this task and a desire to do something more enjoyable. In this case, how do you refocus your energy? “Change the pleasure-pain equation. Now that you know that you procrastinate because you 're either avoiding pain, or find greater pleasure in not taking action, change this equation and give yourself a very, very, strong reason to jump into action immediately” (Tan, 2012).Action is the definite opposite procrastination. By becoming active, you use your time more effectively and increase your odds for success. The positive results should be very motivational.
Another issue with time management is family events. This is an issue that may not be as common for some; however, family events can range from babysitting, travelling, sporting events, and financial contributions. Sometimes, these things can be the hardest to say no to because there is a sense of obligations. How do you say no to someone that has helped you in your time of need or been that source of moral support? How much time do you dedicate to these activities? A good way to decide this would be to prioritize. If the upcoming event is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you have more options with the other event, choose the first. In the case of career/school and family, school or a career is a choice that was made to help improve your family life, how can you benefit your family if you aren’t taking these things seriously? Invest the proper amount of time to reach your desired goals.
In closing, time management is key in developing a healthy lifestyle. It can help all areas of your life to function properly. By dedicating the proper amount of time to your family, school, and career, you truly allow yourself the opportunity to succeed. Make sure that you take the proper steps to avoid procrastination. Just remember that balance is essential, and time is something that we cannot replace, so manage it wisely.
