Tin Man Monologue
“Much later I realized that the real difference was inside” (Campbell, 119).
“How was your day?”
The tentative diction bounced harmlessly against the titanium exterior of my backside before silently crumpling to the ground behind me in a petty, little heap. My Tin Man heart was little affected by this verbal display of misguided concern. Pitiful, really. Though, I somewhat admired the rather pathetic endeavour for sympathy from this yellow man—the amount of bravery that I would have expected from a Cowardly Lion companion. Courageous indeed, this lion was, to have confronted a tired and disheveled boy looking only to pour himself an evening bowl of some generic brand granola cereal. Of course, this did deviate from his usual: a loud

We hid under this guise that was but a makeshift persona, while in reality we found it best to talk behind each other’s backs like a couple of teenage drama queens that had wandered off of the set of Mean Girls. We were not relatives, but rivals. Every word we uttered about the opposing faction caused our forked tongues to flick in hatred and disgust. It was saddening that we had reduced ourselves to the passive-aggressive behavior that we so tenaciously clung to—that we were so distrusting in one another that we believed that any other person that shared our blood had some sort of hidden cannibalistic agenda planned for the rest of …show more content…
My mind wandered as I reached slowly for the plastic milk carton that I had previously placed on the counter in front of me before shoving a small silver spoon into the already soggy mixture.
“I wonder what I got on that math quiz. I should walked the dog today. What’s the weather going to be like tomorrow?” It took me a while after I had already taken a sample bite or two from my liquidy snack that I felt the need to respond to such a sham of a question.
“Hmpf.” A quiet, yet churlish grunt was all that I could muster in response to the inquiry. I kept my back turned, simply hoping that he would finally get what I had meant to be communicated: that I just wanted him to leave me alone. But he didn’t leave. He just stood there. I could feel his gaze piercing my skin and I grew increasingly twitchy as the seconds ticked on with no apparent sign of his despicably thunderous boots trudging away from me any time

“I got my enlistment papers today,” said Lars. “Where’re yours?” Herman stopped smiling. He didn’t reply. “I said, Where are yours?” said Lars. “I won’t be going,” Herman said. His voice was straight and calm though his heart thudded as hard as hooves in his throat. “You hear that, Cal?” Lars said to the other boy. “Richter says he’s not going.” Cal grunted and stepped forward into the lantern light. He held a sickle. “Your daddy not gonna let you fight in the big war?” teased Lars. “Or are you afraid to fight?” “I’m not afraid to fight,” said Herman. He eyed the sickle and wondered if Cal would actually use it on him. Then he looked at Lester and pursed his lips. “What then?” asked Lars. “You plan on stealing our land while we go to war?” “What?” said Herman. “Of course not.” “That’s not what my pa says,” said Lars. “My pa says your pa is a treasonous snake who plans on buying up this whole section while his neighbors go to Europe to fight for this country.” And then Herman said something he didn’t believe: “Well then your pa’s wrong.” Cal dropped the sickle, pulled back his fist, and mashed it into Herman’s mouth. Herman dropped to the ground, his lip swelled immediately.…

As the dust settled in Europe, collaborators were hung, sent running naked down the streets or imprisoned, while the resistance set out to define post-war Europe. The illusion of a clear distinction between Hitler’s henchmen and enemies shaped the psychology, language and power structures that are still present today. Collaboration and resistance, as categories of human behaviour, gained their historical relevance from the weight they carried after the war, rather than the limited part they played in bringing the conflict to an end. In reality, the decision to collaborate was, as choices always are, the individual’s response to his or hers perceived alternatives. It existed within every stratum, and along the entire scale of what is considered good and evil. It came in endless variations, and due to as many motivations. I will, however, argue that self-interest was the most important motivating factor. To avoid exaggerated emphasis on those in charge, I will return to the so called horizontal collaborators, who were often the first to be punished. Not only are their stories as personal as they can get, but their motivations can, with a tiny bit of imagination, be applied to every chunk of society. Also, in order to remain focused on the driving force behind collaboration, I will base my argument on the most crucial motivating factors: self preservation; the dissatisfaction with previous institutions; the common enemy; internal conflict; ideological similarities; and self-interest.…

How ironic, I thought, for his dream of creating a new Oregon. I attempted to speak, but my throat suddenly felt very dry. I slowly removed the blade from the man's neck revealing that I had nipped him. There was no way I could escape from a squad of at least 20 people. I didn't know how skilled they were and I wasn't in great enough shape to fend for myself. “Okey, I’ll let you help me.” I dropped the blade onto the ground creating an unexpectedly loud clank and placed my hands in front of my body in handcuff position.…

    Mr. Honken Monologue

Band has always been an important part of my life, but the teacher who really made it my passion is Mr. Honken. Honken is, to me, a combination of Mangold’s seriousness and Connell’s negligence. Honken has been the most memorable band director yet through his agitation, relaxation, and inspiration. The fact that his original instrument was low brass doesn’t hurt, either. First impressions usually determine the future, but I really don’t remember the first day of band camp, sophomore year, when Honken showed up.…

even witty. Smelled like cigarettes, probably since he also took up smoking since 14 years old, the stress of living in Yokeman can do that to you. At first he hung with out with us, and over time... he started keeping his distance. Then, half a year before graduation he just disappeared. Ryan dropped out of school, not even keeping contact with anyone. It was rumored that his family moved out of state, but at that point I thought he was the luckiest man alive to get out of this place. I used to catch him trying to make eye contact with me, but would turn his head away the moment my eyes look back at him, or he notices the moment I turn my head around he faces the ground or elsewhere assuming I didn’t notice him checking me out. Perhaps…

Throughout the tests of time men and women across the world have shown they really are in times of conflict. In times where the true character of a person is really put to the limit, people are able to see who they really are. These conflicts can serve to reveal unexpected qualities in an individual. Times of conflict can suddenly expose a person’s true moral fibre and the courage of their convictions. A number of people may shy away from their personal qualities, and do their best not to big note themselves, however for some, in times of strong divergence between people or even countries, a persons ability to reason with their counterpart and show elements of compromise and understanding can all of a sudden come to the fore. Conflict can inadvertently result in the discovery of a person’s true beliefs, and their ability to express them with no fear of their opposition’s retaliation. The quality to stand up for what you believe in can reveal itself in these times of disagreement, just like when Martin Luther proclaimed that he ‘Had a Dream’, he went against the grain of society and discovered his enormous will and determination to rise up for what he stands for. However these qualities are not always positive ones, and can emerge from the most brutal of circumstances. The willingness to take a fellow humans life is especially evident in times of war and terror, revealing vicious and unruly qualities in some individuals. The late Osama bin Laden has been notorious for displaying these qualities, perplexing the world at the extent of his inhumane behaviour in instances of…

Mango Snowman wakes before dawn. He lies unmoving, listening to the tide coming in, wave after wave sloshing over the various barricades, wish-wash, wish-wash, the rhythm of heartbeat.
