TMA05 PART 1
ESSAY PLAN
Introduction
Aims - To compare and contrast two methods of researching juvenile delinquency by examining the psychological and sociological approaches taken by different social scientists.
Explain what is meant by the term ‘juvenile delinquency’ and how it can be divided into different sub sections and categorised as disorderly or criminal.
Located the material which is relevant to the essay. Re-read the question several times and note down key words which stand out in each approach (i.e. sociological – labelling, society, social norms, as opposed to words from the psychological approach – upbringing, learnt behaviour, biological etc.). As this will help me some differences and similarities. Pick out certain components I require for my answer.
Main Body -
Outline each approach and use different methods/examples within them to compare and contrast.
Explain what is meant by psychological - looks at ‘what’ makes a person behave in a disorderly way, what factors surrounding their upbringing can affect them in later life.
Sociological approach - ‘why’ and ‘what’ behaviour exhibited is deemed as unacceptable in society and who decides this. Why it is that only certain people are given labels whilst others are not (status in society).
Use the approach of Eysenck who, believed a person was conditioned to behave a certain way due to influences and encounters they experience whilst growing up and compare it to Becker who focuses on labels and the factors a person experiences in life and how they can affect a person’s outlook. Behaving in a way that they think they have to, in order to fulfil their label.
Longitudinal studies and compare it to media influence (an outside factor) and how they contribute to a person’s behaviour.
Look into the research methods of both approaches – not reliable due as people can falsifying information they give by not telling the truth or by omitting certain aspects.
