Family is an important part of life. Families shape us to who we are today, what we say, and how we control our lives. They are a need when growing up. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the book is about the life of a eight year old white girl in the early 1930’s when the Great Depression was at its peak and not many people had enough money to support themselves. Jem was always protective around Scout because she has always had a big mouth and Scout had always relied on Jem to be her playmate throughout her years, this has created a solid sibling relationship with one another. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, she uses Scout and Jem to explore sibling love.
Harper Lee starts the book through Jean Louise perspective talking about Jem’s injury in the elbow, this makes no sense that we don’t know information about the characters and they have …show more content…
already started talking about a broken elbow. The introduction of the story gives us a feeling of the siblings love that we will encounter throughout the story. It shows us a character that we don’t need a whole story on how these two characters already have a strong bond before the book even began. Continuing the book, you read the book of a little girl full of innocence, arrogance, and curiosity with an older brother who is moody, sassy, and annoyed most of the time like most older brothers.
The start of the book started by talking about Jem’s arm is to also confuse you and lead you to thinking “What in the world this talking about?”. This is to hook you to the book, wanting you to read more, and more, and more and so on. As you read the book, you see a life a tomboy in a town with a relationship of love so strong they're inseparable. It makes you feel the love you have with your sibling if you have siblings, the love is so strong they’re inseparable. I find this true with many strong bonds with people, that they love each other to the end of time and space.
Another thing in the beginning of the book is that they “were far too old to settle an arguement with a fist fight,”. This shows that Jem and Scout’s relationship isn’t perfect, and their relationship is like any other sibling relationship and that fighting with each other over the simplest things in life, it’s just a natural part of any relationship. This also gets you to relate if you are a younger sibling with an older brother. Have you ever argued with brother or sister about something useless and in the end it doesn’t matter at all? This happens in the book once or twice, like in real life and ends up okay.
Another thing that is mentioned half-way through the book is that Jem is very moody. Some examples of his moodiness is that Scout and Jem can’t play together at school because Jem said so, Jem always corrected Scout because he was always “right”, and when Scout accidentally gets Jem mad because she reminds him of something he doesn’t like, etc. This sometimes happens to older sibling when they grow up and their interest change. This happens to everyone in one point of their lives with it's getting really upset with their younger sibling, or they tell them to stay any from him/her.
Another thing is that is true in real life that’s in the book is that sibling can be moody time to time.
They may pester you with questions you hate answering, and you tell them to go away. This has happened in the book many time when Jem has told Scout to go away and does not answer her questions. I can tell you from personal experience that older brothers can be moody. Many people with older siblings can relate to this. This aspect of the book is extremely accurate then as it is now on how older sibling handle little siblings.
Lastly, sibling protect each other from danger or plain stupidity. In the end of the book, Jem protects Scout from Robert Ewell because he was trying to kill them both because of the case between him and Tom Robinson. Jem protected Scout as she ran as fast as she could with her costume on, which wasn’t very fast because she didn’t have shoes on and the costume was very awkward to walk in even. Although everyone is safe expect Mr. Ewelle, this can show that sibling will protect their family before themselves even if it is not the smartest thing to
do.
Throughout the book, Scout and Jem show their love for each other constantly throughout the book. They show us what it means to be brother and sister, side by side protecting each other through hardships and sorrow, life and death, even if they are polar opposites. The book depicts all of these things with much detail in the view of an eight year old white girl, which shows us her sorrows and how Jem helped her through those sorrows.
