The game played by Dill, Jem, and Scout throughout the fourth chapter of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird shows that Maycomb is a town run on gossip and ignorance which directly influences the children making it an even bigger problem. For example Jem tells Scout, “‘Besides, I don't’ think he’s still in there. He died a few years ago and they stuffed him up the chimney’” (Lee 51). Even though Jem has never seen or heard from Boo himself, he believes the rumors spread throughout the town and continues to spread the false information unknowingly. All three kids believe everything they hear about Boo Radley, which makes them think it is okay to spread the rumors further and further. This is relevant to everyday life in the sense of all the…

To Kill a Mockingbird has multiple major themes that are outcomes of significant scenes throughout the book. One of the most well-known scene is the trial scene where Tom Robinson is found guilty for a crime he did not commit. Because Scout and Jem were at the trial, the verdict deeply affected their view on the goodness of the people of Maycomb. Lee throughout the novel explores the concept of human morality, the inherent goodness or malevolence of people and how it can have a positive or negative affect on people. Lee achieves this through the coming of age and development of Jem and Scout, and through the effect that human morality has on the characterization of the mockingbirds, Boo Radley…
Maycomb was a “tired old town...there was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see...” This sentence sums up a lifestyle analogous to daily life in the south during the Great Depression. The stock market crash, Great Depression, and Jim Crow south all contributed to the tired ways of small southern towns. Minute towns and crowded cities across the United States suffered immensely during the Great Depression. This period of time remains marred by the evident poverty of the country and racial inequality and segregation.…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem demonstrates moral growth by understanding the way society works. Boo Radley never wants to come outside of his house, but then he starts to realize that Jem and Scout are in danger, and also that the community he lives in is never going change. After that he decides to come outside and to come to the kids’ rescue. Jem says, “Scout, I think I'm beginning to understand something. I think I'm beginning to understand why Boo Radley's stayed shut up in the house all this time... it's because he wants to stay inside."(Pg. 259) Here, Jem realizes there is not one reason that stops Boo from coming outside, it is just because he wants to. Authors often have a very good reason for choosing a particular personality for their story’s narrator. Scout was a vital character in the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Her impartial outlook on life and people was highly voluntary in order to produce the theme and message that Harper Lee was sending to her readers. Many of the events in the story would not have happened or would have occurred very differently if the novel was told through the eyes of an adult narrator. Even though Scout’s narration is often faulty or inaccurate, her innocence often allows readers to see the events and characters in the novel more clearly.…
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, the main theme is that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. This metaphor of not killing mockingbird is clearly portrayed throughout the course of this novel. This theme is so important to the plot of this novel that the author decided to entitle the book after this very metaphor. Mockingbirds are birds that do not do anything wrong and they just give us music. Atticus is the main character in the novel that really stressed why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Mockingbirds are just a simple metaphor for the characters in this book who are killed, such as Mr. Raymond and Tom Robinson.…
The book “To kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is about a family back in the day in Maycomb “The finalist for the most boring town in america.” This means that they think nothing will ever happen there that is remotely bad and they focus on other things like work and stuff. The day after the showdown, Scout and Jem are full of questions about why people act the way they do reminiscing about what had happened the previous night. They are shocked how atticus was not angry at the bad men who tried to hurt him and Tom. Then the kind and heartfelt atticus explains that people aren’t always nice to other people. He talks about how children are better at judging certain situations than adults sometimes.…
Atticus Finch said, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird." Jem learns that it’s wrong to kill a mockingbird because they are innocent creatures. As the citizens of Maycomb are introduced, you realize all the hatred and violence that kids, parents, and friends have to experience. Some children, like Dill, who’s basically an orphan, want nothing except to have a family to look after them; Or Jem, who start out enjoying their young lives, but later grow up to a world full of wrong-doing. Even a man who was victimized from one event that happened in his teen years, grows up innocent minded, yet was still treated as a foe after he grew up. Harper Lee destroys the innocence of three child-like “mockingbirds” in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, to metaphorically illustrate the pureness that’s lost in everyday life. Lee composes a few examples from the city of Maycomb, but soon you realize how these very instances happen in our own lives as well.…
