When the snow first started falling Scout nearly died. She thought the world was going to end. However Atticus confirmed it was just snow. One sad thing that happens in chapter eight is good old Mrs. Radley passes during the beginning of winter months. In chapter eight the children enjoy playing outside despite the cold temperatures. The craziest thing that happened in chapter eight was Miss. Maudie's house burnt down through fire. It was a crazy event at that time in Maycomb. In the movie “To Kill A Mockingbird” people in the town of Maycomb call Atticus Finch and his two children Jem and Scout ‘negro lovers’. The town’s people call them this because Atticus is defending Tom Robinson, a black man. This shows pure racism in the town. People look down on black people so much that they frown upon a white man defending them. In their society it is wrong for a white man to interact with a black man. This racism doesn’t only affect Atticus but it also affects his daughter Scout. At school Scout is called a ‘negro lover’ by a boy in her class and her first thought was to act out violently. Scout doesn’t full understand why she is called that name. This part of the story shows that racism isn’t only going on with adults but children as well.…
One of the many forms of racism and bullying that pops up is the usage of the word “nigger.” The main character Scout deals with a kid named Cecil Jacob. He calls her father a “nigger-lover” (Lee 100) because Atticus, Scouts father is defending an African American man by the name of Tom Robinson- “I’m simply defending a negro- his name’s Tom Robinson.” (Lee 100) Because Atticus is defending Tom, he is enduring ample amounts of criticism from the people. Atticus was even considered to be apart of the lower social pyramid. “...Your daddy was a disgrace an’ that nigger oughta hang from the water-tank.” (Lee 102). Atticus believes in equality in all races, however his belief are looked down upon. “Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for.” (Lee 135). The people in Maycomb compare him to “niggers.” They are degrading Atticus because he is standing up for his ideas. In conjunction with…

Racism is a direct result of ignorance, and many of the people in To Kill a Mockingbird were racist, and those that weren't were greatly affected by it. Then there were the Ewells, who were ignorant on many other levels too. Even Scout's schoolteacher, whose job it was to impart knowledge, was hypocritical and racist!…
Racism in To Kill A Mockingbird was very common, and it is an important part of the story. Racism is shown by the Caucasians in Maycomb against the African-Americans in many different ways. The only reason Tom was killed was because he was colored and he didn't have the freedom the caucasian have. The white society was racist against Africans-Americans call them by a different word. The judge was very racist even after Atticus giving so many proofs that Tom was not the one who did it, the judge already made his mind because the jury was black he had done it. They have not trusted blacks in jails or any other job. In the end, the one main focus of the author was how racism affected black lives, and how it was present at all…

As an illustration, in the text on page 83, it states, “He’s nothin’ but a n****r lover”, says Scout’s cousin- Francis- when he begins insulting Atticus for taking the case of Tom Robinson- a Black man accused of rape. Francis’s use of the n-word leads us to conclude that the use of derogatory language in Maycomb is heavily normalized because the fact that children- like Francis- openly use this type of language, it shows us that the community and adults he lives with use these words enough that the children begin to think it’s okay to use disrespectful language towards others. To further demonstrate this idea, another example of the Finch family being intolerant to African-Americans appears when Scout’s aunt, Alexandra, does not allow her and Jem to go with Calpurnia to her church. “You may not” (136).In making this comment, we can infer that Aunt Alexandra does not want her family being associated with African-Americans. Aunt Alexandra’s comment may be suggesting that because white people treat black people in such unfriendly ways, & because they would often link black people with being mannerless & uneducated, two things that Aunt Alexandra despises, many families would avoid interacting with black people because they feared that it would bring dishonor to their family…
To kill a mockingbird has themes of racial injustice that are still relevant today because today there are a growing number of act of hate crimes toward minorities and people of color in the judicial system and in society as a whole. “Your father is no better than the niggers and trash he defends in court.”-Ms. Dubose(pg. 117). This quote shows that in the 1930’s black people were considered the same as trash and they were looked down upon. A lot of people around Maycomb were very discriminating against black people and they often used the language that Ms. Dubose was using. Even children were using the “N”-word in the book. Just like in the book, the use of the “N”-word is still happening today. There are many songs that are out there that use the “N” word or slightly altered form of it. People also use it in speech. The word today is also…
