The character that I admire the most in To Kill A Mockingbird is Atticus Finch. I admire and look up to him the most because he is very honourable and unselfish. Atticus Finch, is appointed by a local judge to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white girl. Friends and neighbos objected when Atticus puts up a strong and spirited defense of behalf of the accused black man. Atticus renounces violence but stands up for what he believes in. He decides to defend Tom Robinson because if he did not, he would not only lose the respect of his children and the townspeople, but himself as well.
Atticus is a man who lives with integrity everyday. He was incapable of doing anything that would broach the inviolable sanctity of his conscience. He made the honourable decision, even when that decision was unpopular. Atticus quoted this phrase in the book arguing with Scout that he does not care if the Maycomb men thought that his decision was not right and that he’ll stand by his own decisions, “They’re certainly entitled to think that, and they’re entitled to full respect for their opinions, but before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience “ This proves that Atticus is a man with integrity and he will support his own stand no matter who disagrees with him.
Atticus has great moral courage that I look up greatly to. Moral courage is arguably the most important type of bravery, and this Atticus had in spades. Moral courage involves the strength to stick with your own convictions and do the right thing, even when the whole world criticizes and torments you for it. An example of when Atticus possessed moral courage was when Tom was in jail, Atticus sat outside all night reading and faced down an angry mob intent on lynching the prisoner. Another example of when Atticus possess great moral courage is when Scout asked him why he continued
