1. Boo Radley is Mr. Radley’s son and he lives on Jem’s street. His name is Arthur and he is described as the town’s phantom who only comes out at night. Boo joins the bad crowd and he resists arrest and helps his friends lock an officer in the courthouse outhouse. His father locks him up in their house as a punishment for Boo instead of him going to the state industrial school. Boo Radley has not been seen for fifteen years, but after he stabs his father with scissors he is taken away to the courthouse basement and many people see him, but when he is taken home nobody has seen him since.

2. Burris Ewell is the filthiest human Scout has ever seen. He is very poor and his neck is dark gray, the back of his hands are rusty and his fingernails are black. He doesn’t have a mother and he has come to the first day of grade one for the last three years. On the first day of school Burris finds lice in his hair and Miss Caroline tries to send him home, but Burris says that he is leaving for the year and as he leaves he calls Miss Caroline a “snot nosed slut of a schoolteacher”. Atticus says that the Ewells are a disgrace of Maycomb for three generations and they have the freedom to go to school, but they have no desire and it is pointless to force someone to go to school. He also says that they have never done an honest day’s work and they hunt and trap illegally.

3. Jem pushes the tire with Scout inside as hard as he can down the sidewalk because he is angry at Scout. Scout can’t put her hands out to stop herself and Jem can’t catch the tire as he runs after it shouting. The tire rolls across the road crashing into a barrier and Scout is thrown onto the pavement. Scout lands in front of the Radley’s house steps and gets up dizzily and runs out of the yard. Jem is forced to run into the yard to retrieve the tire. Scout hears someone inside the Radley house laughing.

4. Jem, Scout and Dill sneak into Mr. Radley’s backyard on the last night of summer. It is dark out and first Dill tries looking in the side window, but he cannot see anything. Next Jem climbs up the porch and as he is looking through the window, he sees a shadow on the porch with a hat and it walks toward him. After the shadow disappears Jem jumps off the porch and runs to the back fence with Scout and Dill. Dill and Scout sneak under the fence after they hear a shotgun fire into the air. Jem gets caught under the fence and as he crawls out his pants get torn off. When Jem leaves his pants they are all tangled and he can’t get them loose from the fence, but when he goes to get them they are folded across the fence and waiting for him. Someone stitches up his pants, but not in a very professional way.

5. Jem realizes that Boo Radley has been leaving him and Scout gifts in the tree knot hole and that Nathan Radley seals it up, so Boo can’t have a relationship with the kids. Jem finally empathizes with Boo and understands how terrible his life is and how all Boo wants to do is have relationships. Jem feels responsible for some of Boo’s pain and he feels sad he can’t help Boo.
