Tom Robinson's Guilty In 'To Kill A Mockingbird'
In my English Language Arts Class, we have been reading a book called “To Kill a Mockingbird” and in the recent chapters we have been reading about an African American man named Tom Robinson who “raped” a white female named Mayella Ewells but I don’t think he is guilty in this essay I will be telling you why I think Tom Robinson isn’t guilty.

I think Tom isn’t guilty because they found marks on the right side of Mayella’s body and found choking marks around her neck, but how would Tom Robinson do it if his left arm is crippled from a childhood accident when he was a little boy. Another reason why I think he isn’t guilty because Mayella invited Tom in then she grabbed him around his legs and jumped onto Tom the she kissed him. The reason

Tom Robinson was innocent of raping Mayella Ewell. In the story it talks about how Mayella got punched in the eye with the left hand but Tom couldn’t have done it because his left hand is crippled. Reverend Sykes said, “He got it caught in the cotton gin, caught it i Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s cotton gin when he was a boy...like to bled to death...tore all the muscles loose from his bones-”(186). This explains what happened to Tom’s hand and that he couldn’t have punched Mayella with his left hand because he could not use it. Furthermore, when Tom was telling his side of the story he said that Mayella kissed him and that he tried to get away because he knew that it wasn’t right for her do that. Tom explains what happens when Mr. Ewell sees them,…

Tom Robinson is dead. Not a surprise for me, although people do seem startled by this news. I honestly don’t understand how it is possible. Each black person who passes through the courthouse doors doesn’t go back to the family. Usually negroes are, at the least, sentenced to a couple of years in prison, despite the crime ‘committed’. Now and then the punishment can even be worse, if the jury feels particularly discriminatory. At the end everybody who enters that hellish room leaves their children, parents or wives on their own in this cruel cruel world. The events continuously repeat over and over again, and there are always some innocent, optimistic imbeciles who keep hoping for a different verdict to escape the jury’s lips. Fools who keep…

Mayella Ewell is the oldest of 8 sibling in her family, she is motherless and takes care of the smaller children while she works around her father’s house. The whole court house was filled with white families sitting on the bottom rows of cowhide-bottomed chairs while the blacks had to stay in the balcony. The trial started with Mr. Heck Tate in the witness stand, on the left of him was Judge Taylor. Mr. Tate described Mayella's injuries to the solicitor, Mr. Gilmer “Well I was called by Mr. Bob Ewell yonder, it was the night of November twenty-first. In Tom Robinson’s story, he was innocent of committing the crime. Everyday to and from work, Tom would have to pass by the Ewell house. Sometimes Mayella would stop Tom and ask him to help her with some chores in her house. Once he had completed what he had requested of him, he began to leave and that’s when Mayella grabbed him and then “sorta jumped” on him. In the meantime, Mr. Ewell walked into the room screaming and Tom fleeted out. Never once during the trial did Tom say that Mayella was lying; however, she was “mistaken in her mind” (qtd. in Lubet).…

A theme in “To Kill A Mockingbird,” could be that you should never judge a person by their color. The way people were judge affected Tom Robinson’s trial because all colored people were treated differently than white people back in the day. Reverend Sykes explained to Jem; “I ain't ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man” (Lee 279). Tom was not going to be charged with the crime. This is because everything that was said on his half proved that he was innocent but judges never choose a colored man over a white man. Further, Tom Robinson was not able to win the trial because he is a colored man. The judge got the piece of paper and says “ ‘Guilty… guilty… guilty… guilty…’ “(Lee 282). The color of Tom’s skin changed…

I tend to my garden as I watch several cars drive along my street back to their homes. Tom Robinson’s trial must be over. Before the trial even started, I predicted that the verdict would be guilty. When I saw Jem, Scout, and Dill arrive back at their house with long faces, my prediction was confirmed. It is still upsetting for me to hear that another innocent black man’s life was ruined because of the way white people treat them. I did not attend the trial; I do not wish to see an innocent person on trial for their life. I take off my gardening gloves and head inside. As I wash my hands, I see the children looking very upset and confused. I decide to make them chocolate cakes to help to cheer them up. They must be extremely confused and disappointed about the verdict of the trial. They are too young to completely understand our unfair society.…
