ony Abbott is one of the most talked about people in our society. Once, he was like Spiderman, a hero, in the eyes of newspapers, radio and television, but since his ascension to power in 2013, he has been increasingly portrayed as Venom - bumbling, out of touch nincompoop.
Was this a change of heart in a tyrannical conspiracy spanning all forms of media? Or was the poor old guy knocked on the head? What seems to be the most likely explanation is that the media simply recast Abbott from …show more content…
As a result of this, before the elections Tony Abbott was the media’s boy, and the guy Australia needed, the pit bull who would bring Kevin Rudd and the Australian Labour Party “to heel”.
However in less than a year, media outlets such as The Daily Telegraph went from “Australia needs Tony” to “Is time running out for Prime Minister Tony Abbott”. So what has happened to instigate such a blunt change of opinion?
Certainly, one area is Abbott’s perceived attitude to women. As early as February 2010, Abbott drew criticism with his comment that “what the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing is that … their own power bills when they switch the iron on are going to go up.”
The condescending reference toward women was enough to make listeners sit up and take notice but it was the Prime Minister’s reaction, caught on video which gained more widespread attention.
As caller Gloria introduced herself, saying “I work on an adult sex line to make ends meet”, Mr Abbott winked and smiled in the direction of ABC Radio host Jon
