Prime Minister Profile: Tony Blair

Tony Blair was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on May 6, 1953. Although born in Scotland, Blair spent several years of his childhood attending the Chorister School in Durham, England. When Blair was 10, his father ran for Parliament as a Tory but suffered from a stroke the night before the election. Blair later cited his father’s inability to finish the election as a driving factor behind his own political ambition. Blair attended St. John’s College at Oxford University and went on to attend law school at Oxford.

After finishing law school in 1975, Blair began an internship under Alexander Irvine and proved to be a quick learner when it came to local politics. In the late 1970s, Blair joined the Labour Party and in 1982 he tried, unsuccessfully to win a seat in Parliament for the

He worked closely with fellow Labour Party favorite, Gordon Brown, and had a considerable amount of support amongst Parliament. However, following 9/11 and Blair’s decision to support the U.S. “War on Terror” his popularity within Parliament and with the public began to crumble. Additionally, by the time he started serving his third term as Prime Minister it was rumored that Blair and Gordon were barely speaking. Tory leader, David Cameron, took this as a chance to denounce Blair and the New Labour movement.

The largest issue Blair faced during his time as Prime Minister was his support of military intervention in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Sierra Leone. Blair was later harshly criticized by Parliament for his close ties to The United States invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan but did not waiver until his resignation in 2007. The economy was also a central issue during Blair’s time as Prime Minister. While other major global economies struggled, Britain increased employment to the highest level in

However, the split of the coalition led to the unpopularity of other parties because the British public felt that the Liberals and Conservatives were unreliable and not strong enough to run the country. The split of this coalition resulted mainly because of U-turns, failures and tension between both the parties. One of the examples of a U-turn was the breaking of pledges that the powers of the House of Lords would be strengthened. The last straw for the coalition was the 'Chanak Crisis' which seemed likely to end up in a war with Turkey, and by this time many stable conservatives including backbench MP's say Lloyd George as a liability and the coalition was failing in its basic purpose; preventing the rise of the Labour party. As a result of their unpopularity, they were actually helping the Labour Party because the electorate was looking for a stable government that wouldn’t go back on their policies and almost cause another war because they didn’t want that.…

Tony Blair arrives at 10 Downing Street after the Labour election victory, London, May 1997 Photograph: Tim Rooke/Nils Jorgensen/Rex Features A few days before Barack Obama's inauguration I was sitting in a BBC studio in west London, a tiny microphone clipped to my lapel, and waiting to go on-air. On one of the TV monitors there were scenes of exultation as Americans flocked to a pre-inaugural event that formed part of the Passion play surrounding the ascension of the 44th President of the United States of America. One of the BBC presenters leaned over to me and said: "We just don't do hope here, do we?" I thought about that afterwards. Actually, we did do hope here, and it wasn't that long ago. True, it feels now like another era. The time was 1997. John Major was on the way out, along with 18 years of Conservative rule. Tony Blair was on the way in. It was the age, as hundreds of headlines proclaimed, of "Cool Britannia". We look back - after Iraq, after all the disappointments - and what we mostly remember, cynically, is this bright, shiny, smiling young…
