Tony Hoagland Back In My Day Analysis
For my third poem of the semester, I wrote one entitled “Back in My Day”. This poem was my manifesto about America and was inspired by the way I view American is now, how we became increasingly afraid of diversity, and the phrase “back in my day”. The one work that could be said to have influenced this piece would have to be Tony Hoagland’s “America”. I say that as it was a critical view of America and was also a product/inside look of how it was in that general time. Speaking of critical views, I see that a major strength of this particular piece would have to be the general bashing of the United States of America. It does so without adding anything positive about the subject matter and continues to enforce the first few lines, “America, an ideal tourist location/paradise turned …show more content…
Stanza six contains the lines that I’m the proudest of, because it leads up into the culmination of all the points listed previously and really drives home the last two lines. “Cause this is America, conform with us or get out” is really satisfying in a dark way and in my perspective, I believe that it holds a good deal of weight to it. In the case of creating these various descriptions and images, I’d say that they came about from various conversations I would hear or I would catch glimpses of this in the news and on the television. Events that steadily began to change my view on the world and seeing how we could go from a somewhat more peaceful time to the disastrous views and actions that today now holds. The lines that these views most thoroughly shape would be stanzas one, four, and five. As the older generation, truly does blame and judge millennials for some of the numerous faults of today, people do tend to only focus on themselves now and don’t tend to help anyone else, and the American dream is somewhat dead and is now more of a nightmare than it is a

Summary- The millennial generation has a strong right consciousness and always has high expectations and demands. Higher expectations are born primarily from superiority, and as a result they do not work accustomed to their work, but work to adapt to their lives. From a neutral perspective, the author possesses a definitive purpose but elicits wild generalizations upon the entire millennial generation, ultimately detracting authenticity and credibility as the author’s voice leaks into the article. Tyler is clearly well-versed in the subject and openly expresses her opinions as fact throughout her work; she smartly refrains from speaking in the first person, but with the inclusion of her opinions, she might as well use “I” in every argument. She begins the article with the inclusion that millennials have underdeveloped brains, are hopelessly reliant upon technology, and possess a cloud of over-attached parents. She assumes that this particular generation will wreak negative impacts on the workforce as she braces employers for the impending intrusion. For example, she opens her argument with youths’ inferiority. “Older generations that couldn’t wait to proclaim their independence can’t comprehend this generation’s need for parental guidance and influence” . The choice of small rhetorical choices ultimately guides the reader…

On account of my own experiences (Yes, I know personal experience doesn’t trump truths) within the Millennial generation. This generation sings a song that is of a different tune than the one “The Newest Greatest Generation” suggests. When reflecting on where my peers are and are headed, I see a generation that is filled with persons of high character, creativity, and open mindedness. Not to say this isn’t a generation without flaws, as we have many, but unlike Stein, I wouldn’t hesitate to label this generation as altruistic, full of fervor, and philanthropy. As a reader it was difficult for me to believe the “truths” of this article, and easy for me to accept this as another case of social ageism, the “us vs them”…

In this article by Ross Pomeroy and William Handke, the main idea is The Most Entitled Generation Isn’t Millennials, It’s Baby Boomers. It runs through a basis where the Baby Boomers are the ones who ruined the economy, following the Great Recession. Surviving in a time were economic stability is not guaranteed, Millennials still have to live with many excessive policies that are continuously imposed by lawmakers, the majority of them falling in the Baby Boomer generation. With the concentration on issues that don’t matter as much in the America we are evolving to, such as tax cuts to corporations, the rest of the issues that are directly affecting this age get pushed back constantly. Millennials couldn’t be the ones entitled in a world where the Baby Boomers run every decision on the opposite way of change.…

From my research, I’ve gathered that the poem “America” was written by one of the most influential poets of the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a golden age in African American culture. The personification used in this poem indicates how Mckay feels about America during the century by giving it human traits. He uses America as a woman to make it more relatable and gives the country mother traits. As a source says “... he is creating the image of America being a mother, feeding him “bread of bitterness.””…

Today I read two articles that have impacted my thought of the millennials era, those two articles are The Outsiders: How Can Millennials Change Washington If They Hate It? by Ron Fournier and Millennials: The Greatest Generation or the Most Narcissistic? by Jean Twenge. In the first article they really explained that this generation, the people of today are the ones that they younger people are more service oriented than anyone ever was. This is a great thing, but whats the link? Nothing actually. These young adults are going out and helping their community just because they want to help out not because they want a job in the government or politics. In fact they don't see politics or the government actually helping their community. They are…

Not only does it affect us now, it will also affect through the span of our life time. So why not show the older adults and peers that we are not who they think we are. We are better. We show that it isn't just a person that can change the world it can be a team. Generation Y is an innovative generation of millenials that work together to make this world a magnificent place, a place of new ideas and creations. We are a generation that works smart, not hard and because of that it makes us look lazy. However, because of the groups we work in and how we get the work done, at the end it shows that we do work hard. Saying that this generation is always being lazy is a misconception. In regards to a personal connection, Edith is going to school full time and is working two jobs. She manages to keep her grades at a outstanding point and manages a social life along with all of her other responsibilities. Andre is a young man who also goes to school full time and once again, works at best buy along with many other time commitments. Allie goes to school full time and works as a certified nursing assistant along with many other commitments. This goes to show that this generation is not full of slackers and that there is hard working individuals that are part of the millennial title. We have yet to change everyone's mind but by taking one step at a time and using our voices to the best of our ability. We can change the…

    The Millennial Generation

With technology easily accessible throughout their lives, it is easy to say the Millennial Generation had it easy, and they did. They take for granted the ease of access and the quick flow of information, a thing unlike any prior generation. Some may even say that they abuse their use of technology by using it at inappropriate or unnecessary times. Next, the generation’s expectations are far too high when looking for a job. David Bass takes this side of the argument. Although a Millennial himself, Bass describes a generation forcing themselves into massive debt, and then blaming outside factors. “... many reasons for my generation’s predicament… a direct result of our own choices.” (Bass, 31). With low employment rates, the Millennial Generation would rather go into debt than finding a job. Millennials will go to an undergraduate school for a four degree. Afterwards, unsure of what to do, they will then go to graduate school amassing an even larger debt. During this time period, the Millennial Generation will have also gained a large credit debit, setting them even further behind. These “self inflicted wounds” force Millennials to move in with the parents as they can’t afford, or can’t function, on their own. With all the schooling behind them, Millennials hold a higher expectation in their future job force than what is realistic. With this false reality, Millennials might reject jobs they see as beneath them. It is due the unrealistic employment placement that makes the Millennials seem lazy. Is it entirely their faults,…

Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comment is made from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never been truer than it is today. The young are better educated. They have a lot more money to spend and enjoy more freedom. They grow up more quickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They think more for themselves and do not blindly accept the ideals of their elders. Events which the older generation remembers vividly are nothing more than past history. This is as it should be. Every new generation is different from the one that preceded it. Today the difference is very marked indeed.…

First, let’s look at who they are. As a baby boomer, I can tell you that this generation—sometimes called the “Connecteds”—are our own invention. We raised Gen Y to believe that they can do anything and be anything. We made their lives easy enough that they now believe they deserve to live first and work second. (How dare them!) So the first thing we have to do is stop being pissed off at our own creation and embrace the brilliance of this Gen Y community.…
