Vocabulary
Allah - Arabic word for God; Muslims worship the same God as Christians and Jews, but some of the revelations are interpreted differently. The word "Allah" is a unique word because it is genderless. It is neither masculine nor feminine. (I)
Adhan - the first sound that the newborn hears. It is a call to prayer spoken into the baby's right ear. (I)
Abraham - God made a covenant with him (story of Abraham: pg. 128) (J, C, I)
Anicca - belief of impermanence. Life is ever changing, unpredictable, uncertain. (Three Marks of Existence) (B)
Atman - the true self (H)
Anatta - there is no permanent identity or existence (not self). Everybody is made up of five parts: body, feeling, perception, mental actions and awareness. (Three Marks of Existence) (B)
Baptism - a priest or deacon pouring water over the person's head and saying "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Rite of Initiation) (C)
Bodhi Tree - Siddhartha Gautama sat under a Bodhi tree and meditated for 49 days trying to achieve enlightenment (B)
Bris - or Brit Milah, eight days after the birth of a son, the rite of circumcision is performed. It initiates the infant into the people of the covenant. (J)
Bhakti - the yoga of love and devotion. One of the main practices is e constant repetition of one of God's names. (The 4 Yogas) (H)
Buddha - the founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama; teachers who fully understand the nature of mind and reality are also called Buddhas (B)
Bodhisattvas - people who have achieved enlightenment but have chosen to stay on the human plane of existence, suffering, death, and rebirth. Their purpose is to teach and heal others on their journeys. (B)
