The temple took 15 years to complete. It was constructed between the 7th and 22nd years of the queen’s rule. The structure was constructed of limestone, unlike others in its time that were constructed of sandstone. It had a very long colonnaded terrace that deviated from the center of the structure. The reason for this was caused by the central location of the burial chamber. The structure itself has 3 layered terraces that reach 97 feet tall. Each story was made up of a double colonnade of square piers.…

Evolution is defined as a slow and steady change in the same species to help their survival. There were two theories on this type of evolution: Lamarck’s theory of acquired characteristics and Darwin theory on natural selection. Both scientists agree that evolution is caused by the need of survival. Natural selection is the process by which biological traits of an organism become less in common in a population over time. This process can even result in a different species. Polar bears have gone under a series of evolutionary changes over time to help them survive in conditions on the planet some such adaptations include larger paws, thicker white fur, extra fat to keep them warm and more recently they have developed polar bear type teeth. These…

Located in the ancient Egyptian capital Thebes, now modern Luxor, the Malkata palace complex was built by the 18th dynasty king Amenhotep III at the onset of the 30th year of his reign in preparation for his first sed-festival and later served as the setting for his second and third sed-festivals in the 34th and 37th years of his reign, respectively (O’Connor & Cline). Entering the villa the first room I walk into is the atrium. The atrium is the main public room in a Roman house. In the middle of the atrium is an impluvium, which is like a small pool. And it has an open ceiling above it so it can catch rain water. This room leads me out to the Inner Peristyle. Rows of columns surround this beautiful garden. The columns are modeled after those in the House of the Colored Capitals in Pompeii. In the corners are marble fountains that are re-creations from the Villa dei Papri. And a narrow pool is in the center and is lined with replicas of bronze statues that resemble women that would have once been found at the Villa dei Papiri. As I walk around the colonnade I notice the coffered ceiling. This ceiling imitates stone ceilings found on the Street of the Tombs in Pompeii. The colonnades floor is paved with terrazzo.…

Phaistos being 8400 square metres is built on the most spectacular settings of all Crete on a large hill over looking the entire Messara Plain. 2 Italian men excavated the palace, Federico Halbherr and Luigi Pernier. Phaistos was one of the other major Cretan centres, which had control over its own district. The palace, just like other palaces of Minoan Crete was destroyed three times before it was finally rebuilt on top of the old ruins of the previous buildings. The attention of historian’s was directed at the striking features of the ceremonial staircase that arose from the west court and believed to have acted as the main entrance into the palace. There are a number of open court areas found in the front part of the building, which would include an opening to residential areas and reception. There were also workrooms hidden in the northeast. The west building contained multiple storerooms for pithoi and more rooms for religious instalments. The full architecture of Phaistos is a simple design compared with Knossos and is built in an orderly arrangement. The palace fit into well-defined areas, that being guest’s rooms and cult rooms, main residential quarters, central courtyard, main public rooms and storerooms, workshops and domestic areas. Unlike Knossos, there have been no efforts at restoration but only…

The Mycenaean’s architecture was influenced by the Minoans, which included palaces, fortresses, and burial monuments. Like the Minoans, Mycenaean also have large palace complex as redistribution centers. The heart of the palace is the throne room, on top there are many other private apartments set aside for storage, administration and manufacturing. The rooms are decorated with fresco painting on walls and floors. However, their whole palace is surrounded with fortification walls reaching up to 13 meters high and 8 meters thick.
