Toronto Symphony Orchestra
On Tuesday November 3rd the Toronto Symphony Orchestra preformed at the Roy Thompson Hall. This concert highlighted the brass section in the orchestra and even included the world famous tuba soloist, Øystein Baadsvik from Norway. He is the only tuba virtuoso to make a career out of being a tuba soloist. The conductor for this performance was Sameer Patel, who is known as one of America’s best young conductors. Sameer Patel is newly appointed the position of assistant conductor for the San Diego Symphony and has had previous experience with many other symphonies’ including Fort Wayne Philharmonic where he has conducted the symphony in over 100 performances. I thought Sameer Patel was a good choice to conduct the Toronto Symphony for this concert, …show more content…
I liked this piece because it showed everyone that music is suppose to be fun and individualized. Instead of playing normal rhythms and notes, he also sung into the tuba at the same time to create multiphonic sounds. He also used what he calls “lip beats” to create percussion sounds while playing. After a while he brought up tuba player for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Henry Paterson, and his student Braydan Pelley to play a trio. Together they played “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainer. I thought it was a good song to play because the concert focused on the bass section. Although I thought this was a good song to play, I think they should have told us what song they were going to play first, because it was difficult to pick out the tune at the beginning and I feel as though people would have enjoyed it more if they could have had the tune in their heads from the …show more content…
The reason I liked this song was because of how upbeat it was from the start. The song highlighted the trumpet, like the original. The tempo was fast and had a very happy vibe to the piece. I thought putting it in the middle of the concert was a good idea to get peoples energy level up again after some of the slower songs. This was a great song that featured the brass section and got peoples

I watched the concert on February 26, 2011 at 7:00pm. The name of the music group was Toronto Sinfonietta, and the artistic director was Matthew Jaskiewicz. There were 10 soloists in total- Leslie Ashworth, Daniel Hass, Nicole Li, Amadeusz Kazubowski-Houston, Annie Zhou, Lily Chapnik, Sarah Velasco, Daniel Temnik, Kara Sojung Park and Anna Vertypolokh. The concert was performed at the Isabel Bader Theatre which is one of the most popular additions to the architectural renewal of the University of Toronto’s downtown campus. There are a total number of 500 seats. There were approximately 450 seats occupied. Some of the seats are on flat floor and some of seats are on the balcony.…

I have never heard such music as this and watch the players articulate the movements and timing necessary to be able to play such difficult pieces as these. Their sound was like a whole orchestra playing with them but it was only four players. It was a whole new experience for me. These pieces were beautiful but I guess I just didn’t have an ear for the changes in pitch and frequency. It was quite odd but also added to the pieces. I can’t wait to go to other concerts. The atmosphere is unlike any other. This experience unmatched by other concert experiences I’ve…

Each of the composers have been recognized internationally, and their recordings are still being played to this day. Those whom have passed on are still recognized by their contributions to music. Those whom are still alive, are still knocking down barriers and pouring into the lives of young musicians and conductors. We salute these great men for their great work, for it has certainly not gone…

performance. I love that they use Benny Goodman’s composition to end the whole concert because it really brought the 1920’s big bang jazz’s feeling back to the audience. I think the repertoire for this performance was good because there were a mix of many different styles, such as contemporary pieces, swing, blues, free jazz, and etc. In my…

The piece I enjoyed the least was “‘Tarantella’ from August Bournonville’s Napoli”. I found it distracting how in the piece the dancers that weren’t dancing were standing on the side, still visible. They were still on the stage distracting me from the dancers in the center. It was distracting to have them still visible on stage and not behind the curtain, backstage.…

Although I am beginning to appreciate classical music more, I personally enjoy music with words more than music without words. When songs have words I pay more attention trying to figure what the storyline is behind the song. I am very into music all genres such as, pop, country, rock, reggae, and so on. I am open to listening to anything new, which is why I enjoy going to different music events such as this block party. Overall, I enjoyed this performance very much and I am glad I got to see such a great band perform for free, thanks to Utica College. I wish I could have listened to more but I am glad I got to hear a few musical selections before the event was…

I went to see Overture to King Stephen, Op. 117 and Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36, both composed by Ludwig van Beethoven and performed by Los Angeles Philharmonic at Disney Hall on December 31 2012. The music group consisted of about sixty-three bowed string instrumentalists, ten woodwind instrumentalists, nine brass instrumentalists and four percussion instruments and the conductor is Esa-Pekka Salonen.…

The viola player tapping the viola with the bow to make a sound like blink blink blink was creative in my eyes. It was interesting to see a beautiful piece played with only three instruments. The song is so beautiful that it sounds like music you would hear in a fairy tale forests. I liked the piece “Soft Watches” by Ileana Perez-Valazquez. It was a creative and fun idea to make the piece based off the painting Salvador Dali’s famous painting “Persistence of Memories”.…

The first part is Festival Chorus. They have organized very well. There are a lot of kids sing on the stage. All the songs are well prepared; everyone performs different parts in a song. All of them mix in a perfect way, it sounds much more professional. Sometimes cadence, while sometimes is melodious. I really enjoy them. The audiences give a shower of applause to all the singers. This first part is a really good start of the entire concert.…

The drummer did an awesome job at the intro, which led to such wonderful consonance of trombone, trumpet and saxophones. The musician made great jumps on the stage. There were no rule; everyone just wanted to have fun. Everyone started shouting “hey!” as the song went on. The rhythm section did a great job on keeping the beat full, strong and steady through the entire song. In my opinion, the climax of the song was reached at the swung note when the trombonist was “feeling the music”. Once again, the drummer and the upright bass-er ended the sone…

The first song of the evening was ‘Tear and Alnmena’. All the audience was captivated when it began. The opening of this music was like another mood’s music more than Jazz as any other country’s traditional music. Totally, the mood of this music was dark and mysterious. The sound of the bass clarinet which I saw first was freshly, and trombone’s main solo playing was also new feature in this concert.…

When I began these reading assignments, I did not have a clear understanding of what I expected from a conductor. The conductors I have played for do so much to prepare for and lead rehearsals and yet I just expect it from them and do not question how they produce such results. These readings helped me to gain a new prospective on the conductor’s process before they step in front of an ensemble. Each of the authors whose works I read had a slightly different opinion of conductors and their role in an ensemble.…

“Nobody’s Perfect,” written by Sammy Nestico was the first piece. The song greeted the audience with the classic jazz rhythm by setting a romantic mood and throughout the song. Brendan Carroll who played the saxophone, was exceptionally moving as he stood up when giving out his solo. The director chose a great piece as it was worth listening to at the start. “Madcap,” written by Chuck Owen, is an upbeat song that created a jazz-surge effect. This piece, in particular, was rhythmic thinking where it started out as a steady tempo and seemed to get faster near the end. “Point of You” written by James Miley, is a funky, hip hop tune that I felt stood out the most. It had a different style than the classical jazz music that included an electric guitar played by soloist, Brian Sheu. The dynamics of the song started at the beginning where all instruments including saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, drums, and bass played at once. Throughout the song, you could feel the song getting louder as it echoed within the room, and then changed into a soft, moderate level until the song ended. “One Mint Julep,” arranged by Baylock, was my favorite piece among the seven. It was the catchy, upbeat rhythm that caught my attention and pulled me in. This Latin-inspired music had new style from an R&B tune. The pattern was very noticeable and well-expressed; I, especially enjoyed listening to the soloists with Nichole Boaz on the piano and Myles Taylor on the saxophone. When the soloists got out of their seat to play their part, I could feel the excitement build and wanted to get up as everyone applauded. The balance…

The concert had many varied orchestra pieces with different rhythms and melodies. Certain pieces and sounds played throughout the concert reminded me of music played in eerie movies, romantic scenes, or family movies. Attending this concert made me more aware of the diversity of style and techniques used in orchestra concerts. I feel they used a variety of techniques to bring the rock theme together. I enjoyed this orchestra concert because they combined the different sounds of the orchestral instruments in an effective manner. I now have more knowledge regarding instruments, musicians, conductors, and the importance of brining it all together. I learned about the different important aspects of music. I enjoyed listening to different musical…
