Gangs and cartels are notorious for acts of violence including torturing victims. Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, is one of the most famous gangs with having more than 50,000 members in the United States alone. Originating in Central America MS-13 traveled over to the United States to grow in Los Angeles, California. Mandalit del Barca cites the Honduran National Police Minister Oscar Alvarez, who called MS-13 members, “killing machines, cutting people in pieces, raping women, killing people for fun. They might be youngsters, they might be poor. But these youngsters are monsters" (del Barca). The gang members used torture to acquire power and to instill fear into their victims. With more power and fear over ordinary people, the gang gets stronger and larger. This is the reason gangs like MS-13 commit heinous crimes involving torture, for the power and fear over everyone.
Torture has been used since the early ages and continues to be used as an avenue for many reasons. Punishment is not the only reason people choose to torture. A common theme with torturers is the power and authority they yield over a victim, along with the ability to uncover information.
