(Claim) The 4.4 million children who play tackle football sustain more than 500,000 concussions in the United States. The problem is players usually don’t report anything after a hit to the head and that hit can always lead to brain injury. Football helmets should higher their technology to combat concussions because helmets are still causing major head injuries. For this to take effect helmet companies will need to invest more in there research to construct there merchandise better.

(Data #1) The hard-hitting sport of football has players that are bigger, faster and more powerful than ever. Dr. Ann McKee, an associate professor of neurology and pathology at Boston University has been studying brains of deceased football players. She wanted to illustrate the damage that repeated hits to the helmets could cause. She was given the brains of 16 former NFL players some of whom suffered dementia, ALS or severe depression. Families were wondering whether there was a link to between football and the psychological, physical or behavior problems that affected some of the older players. Testing was completed and 13 of the brains were diagnosed with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. In addition McKee has examined the brains of deceased college and high school football players and found evidence of CTE in several of them as well. (King Peter)

(CTE), which is a degenerative brain disease, has been linked to repeated head trauma and to former pro football player junior Seau, the 20- season veteran NFL linebacker who committed suicide the year of 2012. Seau is the latest football player to commit suicide and later be diagnosed with CTE. Former NFL veterans Dave Duerson, Terry Long and Andre Waters all shot themselves to death and were later found to have the disease. Out of the 34 former NFL players who have died and donated their brains to research, the percentage of them who have pathologically confirmed CTE is staggering.

Concussions while playing football has been under the microscope for a while now, the players that are wanting compensation for these concussion incidents are saying the concussions have caused neurological impairments and multiple other fatal diagnoses such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS and even death. One of the lead plaintiffs in this class action against the NFL was Kevin Turner, who died at the age of forty-six. Turner was diagnosed with ALS six years before he died, it turned out that the diagnoses was wrong. Researchers at Boston University have found that Turner spent the last few years of his life with a severe case of football related chronic traumatic encephalopathy also known as CTE. Bennet Omalu discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in a former NFL player, Mike Webster. CTE is a progressive brain degenerative disease that is caused by repetitive brain trauma. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy can affect who has had multiple brain injuries and may be any age. CTE can only be diagnosed through an autopsy but, tests can be done to determine if a person might have it. Some of the symptoms of CTE include cognitive impairment, impulsive behaviors, apathy, short-term memory loss, difficulty planning and carrying out tasks, emotional instability, substance abuse and suicidal thoughts or behavior. (Mayo Clinic) Because Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is only diagnosable through autopsy all of the symptoms are unclear. (Mayo Clinic) Other possible symptoms may include irritability, aggression, speech and language difficulties, dysphagia, motor impairment, vision and focusing problems, olfactory abnormalities, and dementia. These symptoms happen not only because the brain is literally deteriorating but because people with CTE have an abnormal buildup of a protein in their brain called nau. (Boston University) Right now there is not a true treatment or cure for chronic traumatic encephalopathy but doctors suggest that cutting back on physical activities might help reduce symptoms. Prevention for CTE is basically to take concussions very seriously and always take precautions in contact sports. (Mayo…

Researchers believe that there is only one way to diagnose a patient claiming of having Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This brain disease can only be diagnosed post mortem. Meaning the the victim would have to be diseased or dead in order for them to inspect their brain. This is because in order for them to find the protein called tau, they have to slice different parts of different sections or lobes of the brain tissue into many individual slices so it can be carefully examined underneath the lens of a microscope. Stories like michael Webster's is one of many hundreds of cases of CTE. Webster’s case was just the first. A great defensive player named junior Seau. Junior was a linebacker in the NFL. He was known for his passionate playing style and ability to hit hard. He was a ten time All-Pro, a 12 time Pro Bowler, and named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade player. On May 2nd 2012 the Hall of Fame linebacker shot himself in the chest at age 43. He did this so that Scientist could look at his brain so that they could get a better understanding of CTE. After several examinations and studies Jr. Seau tested positive for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. The list of ex-NFL players keeps growing…

As what might be expected, not many gladiators lived to the age of retirement; the sport was simply too ruthless (Coleman, 2011). Sadly, the same is true for football. Football players go their entire lives getting their bodies beaten up for money; money being an extremely strong incentive to do such a thing. However, injuries incurred in one’s youth can have long lasting effects on their health. The concussion is one such injury. A concussion can cause traumatic brain injury (Center for Disease Control, 2016). The long term effects of traumatic brain injury are impaired memory, motor skills, and sensation as well as mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, and personality changes (Center for Disease Control, 2016). In severe cases, traumatic brain injuries can lead to comas or death (Center for Disease Control, 2016). Suicides among football players have also been attributed to traumatic brain injury (X). Thus, football players, like gladiators, are susceptible to short lives from brutal…

Anywhere from just a broken bone, or in the long run they worry for the CTE disease.“I'm horrified every time an athlete runs out on a field on a Friday night," Zac's mother, Brenda Easter, told the Register after learning of McKee's latest findings. "We don't know who the next Zac is going to be." (Board, Editorial). This statement was made after a football player’s mom had to deal with the loss of her son after his football career when he had CTE. This disease caused Zac to commit suicide because he didn’t have emotional control and he was struggling. This has happened multiple times, therefore football is not a safe sport because of the effects it leaves on…

60% of head trauma actually comes from football. This head trauma is commonly known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or CTE. Though CTE’s symptoms are not as well known to pediatricians or doctors alike, research does show that it increases such behavior as extreme aggressiveness, depression, suicidal thoughts, and/or abuse of drugs and alcohol later on in an ex-players lifetime. CTE was first discovered…

Doctors have done research and discovered that CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is one of the major brain diseases caused from concussions. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is harmful because it can cause a build up of a protein called tau, which slowly kills brain cells. Brain Injury Research Institute states that, “20 percent of this country’s high school football players suffer brain injuries in any given season”(Nader, Reed). Dr. Bennet Omalu, the neuropathologists who discovered CTE, believes that children younger than eighteen should not be playing tackle football. Unlike athletes older than eighteen, “the 4 million youth and high school football players in this country are placed on teams by the adults in their lives…”(Nader, Reed).…

As of May 23, there have been over 2,200 lawsuits against the NFL over concussions. Most people think that concussions occur only during huge helmet-to-helmet collisions resulting in a player being knocked unconscious. These hits do cause severe concussions but the truth is that most concussions happen during small hits or in a dog pile. These mild hits add up and take a toll on your brain. I believe that the NFL should implement a concussion limit and mental test in order to protect player’s brains from damage. (Ex: more than 3 mild concussions in a single season will result in a mandatory leave for the rest of the season, and the player must pass a mental test to see if he is capable of playing again in the next season.)…

The study used diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and showed a relationship between white matter damage and depression in former football players. More specifically, of the 3 depressive symptoms that were assessed (affective, cognitive, and somatic), the researchers found that the cognitive factor was significantly correlated with concussions (r = 0.63; P< .001).…

A condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) has begun to occur more and more often due to certain physical contact sports such as football, wrestling, and hockey. Head trauma and repetitive concussions are the leading cause of the disease; it can also result in increasing the chances of other medical issues such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s disease. CTE can only be diagnosed after the disease’s destruction has already started because it is a progressive condition (Costanza, et…

The news of Seau death would not only rock the nation, but stun those closest to him. Though never being treated for any injury of those injuries, Seau continued to play time and time again without considering the destructive effect that would be left over. Therefore, it is certainly no doubt that Seau may have suffered various types of head traumas Various sources speculate that he may have had a condition known as CTE, a…
