 Reading
 “If
 you
 shoot
 you
 will
 win!”
 out
 of
 a
 bright
 red,
 perfectly
 squared
 box,
in
big,
chunky,
black
letters
in
the
toys
aisle
at
the
supermarket
might
 sound
 intriguing
 by
 calling
 your
 attention,
 and
 making
 you
 smile,
 right?
 It’s
 not
even
funny
if
a
child
feels
the
same,
though.

 A
year
ago,
I
experienced
something
really
attention-grabbing
that
made
my
 vision
 towards
 toy
 guns
 change
 completely.
 Walking
 out
 of
 the
 Pirates
 of
 the
Caribbean
ride
at
Disney
World
Orlando,
a
father
was
having
a
serious
 talk
with
one
of
the
magically
disguised
vendor
at
the
gift
shop.

And…there
is
even
more
to
this.
Teenagers
are
the
ones
who
are
acting
in
 this
trashy
video.
And
children
look
up
to
older
ones
always.
I
don’t
think
it
is
 an
 example
 to
 be
 killing
 each
 other
 with
 toy
 guns
 in
 a
 commercial
 that
 thousands
 of
 children
 look
 at
 everyday.
 Also,
 it
 is
 funny
 how
 they
 have
 included
people
from
all
races
and
extremities.
In
one
side
we
find
the
cute,
 blonde
girl,
and
on
the
other
the
cool,
mean
boy.

 To
finish,
I
would
like
to
mention
that
this
is
only
one
of
the
trillions
of
brands
 there
are
of
toys
this
type.

And
each
brand
has
numerous
advertisements.
 And

The
 nature
 of
 writing
 an
 op-ed
 is
 very
 important
 in
 developing
 the
 ability
 to
 express
 yourself
freely
with
a
specific
idea
towards
something.
Also,
writers
spread
their
word
and
 ideals
through
op-eds
easily
because
many
are
published
in
various
newspapers,
and
all
 the
rest
are
in
the
Internet.
These
types
of
tasks
are
intended
to
explore
certain
aspects
of
 the
course.
For
example:
one’s
bias,
persuasion
abilities
together
with
a
person’s
personal
 expression
through
opinions.
The
main
idea
linked
to
this
particular
section
of
the
course,
 is
to
investigate
and
be
able
to
recognize
the
variety
of
ways
of
how
media
today
impacts
 and
reforms
society.
Additionally,
the
topic
I
was
focused
on
for
this
task
specifically
is
how
 toy
 advertisements
 arise
 violence
 in
 children,
 in
 other
 words
 how
 from
 the
 simple
 act
 of
 being
 persuaded
 to
 but
 the
 toy
 guns
 and
 pistols
 from
 the
 colorful
 boxes,
 they
 are
 easily
 guided
into
developing
violence
in
their
daily
activities.
The
techniques
I
used
were
mainly
 humor;
 short
 sentences
 and
 paragraphs,
 exclamations,
 questions,
 comparisons
 and
 diction.
Clearly,
my
topic
links
to
this
part
of
the
course
because
advertisements
take
a
big
 portion
of
media,
and
in
my
case,
the
impacts
are
shown
in
children
through
aggression.
It
 is
also
important
to
mention
that
it
is
scientifically
proven
that
children
learn
the
most

Beck writes, “After someone is shot, the story starts with details about the kind of gun used, the capacity of its magazine, and a rundown of how it was acquired” (10). Although people are blamed for the crime, Beck realizes that it is not the person that is investigated for media purposes, but the gun used in the crime. This book is primarily revolved around myths such as this one and others that are commonly linked to the discussion of guns gun control, but he also includes different twists and turns as well. While reading this book, the reader is able to learn more about the right to bear arms, given to them by the Founding Fathers of the United States, and the on-going issue of homicide, armed violence and overall gun…

In the picture Anthony Bolin, a boy, 5 years old, was holding a gun with his both hands and watching cartoons. There are two things that the viewer could differentiate him from the normal kids instantly. One is the way that he held the gun. Anthony held the gun like an experienced gun-user did, and he even put his finger on the trigger. He looked alert and ready to pull the trigger anytime. Another is his dead eye. The dead eye made him look like a fighter and looked similar with those disobedient criminal kids. From the caption we knew more details: “…five months after being shot in his living room. … his grandmother noticed a change in his attitude. "He's become tougher, like a teenager," she said. It struck me that kids aren't allowed to be kids anymore.” (Joseph) That was the story behind this photo, which is more sad and shocking than the picture. When these kids don’t allow to be kids anymore, what the world could look like? Gun shots and defensive murder, these experiences will definitely isolate them from other boys who only play gun in the game, which represents the majority society. Joseph’s photographs is like a window opened us an opportunity to look inside these gang kids childhood. Through Anthony Bolin, it is not hard to imagine that how earlier the gun started to intervene in these…

A story written in by Gerard Jones called Violent Media is Good for Kids that appeared in Mother Jones under the political section, written 28 June 2000. He is an author of several works to include fictional and non-fictional works. His written for Marvel Comics and other companies. However, it was his mom that got him hooked on comic books, she thought it would teach him about the bigger picture, he liked the violence. The comic books helped him evolve as a human. And as he evolved, so did his needs for greater substance or more complicated story lines. He argues that comics are healthy and that is teaches important lessons about life, emotions, and the interactions of life.…

As a youth, I often wrote essays for school. Although writing isn’t my strong point, I recently have learned new skills and tactics to formulate decent articles. I also have learned what to notice while reading articles. Following the reading of three articles, I can analyze and evaluate them and identify several essential elements. I plan to determine the strengths and weaknesses, the effectiveness of evidence presented and determined if the author has proven their thesis statement. The three essays I chose for my paper were “Childhood Obesity” by Janet Barnett, “Taking the “Rap” For Violence in Music” by Kerri Bennett,…

It is in everybody mind that two men meet a high noon in the middle of a busy street for everybody to watch and then when the clock strikes you draw your pistol and shoot. Though movies and television would like us to believe otherwise, it was very rare when gunfights occurred with the two gunfighters squarely facing each other from a distance in a dusty street. “This romanticized image of the Old West gunfight was born in the dime novels of the late 19th century and perpetuated in the film era, to such a point that this fictional version is what our mind’s eye quickly conjures up when we hear the word gunfight.” In actuality, the real gunfights of the Old West were rarely that "civilized.”…

That. The target audience for this article is anyone who does not have any experience with how to use guns, yet may judge others who do. He has some credibility because he is a journalist; although, he is honest to the audience that he is not an expert with guns. This article is more about one person’s story to learn more about guns and to experience what people feel when they use a gun. This is very different from the other two articles because Hotchkiss’ article is not very strong in ethos and logos; however, he appeals to pathos. The author uses some charged and emotional language that is inappropriate for some of his audiences but he is successful in catching his readers’ attention by the use of sarcasm and humor. He just reports what he feels when he used a gun from the perspective of one person, but the other two articles are based on opinions concluded after facts rather than…

Gerard Jones' essay “Violent Media is Good for Kids” was a very interesting paper. He opens with a story of him as a child, “alone and afraid” of the rage that was inside of him. His parents taught him that violence was wrong and that rage was something that could be simply overcome. Jones' main argument was aimed at parents, saying that they are stifling a child's natural instinct of anger and rage. He wrote that “we send the message to our children in a hundred ways that their craving for imaginary gun battles and symbolic killing is wrong...”, and uses his own childhood as an example of how comics were good for him because they were juvenile and violent. I feel that his explanation of our fear of “youth violence” is logically sound, and I agree with him that violent media can actually help children.…

Gun violence in the United States has become an epidemic. From the Civil War to the present, 567,000 Americans have died in combat; but since 1920, over 1 million American civilians have been killed by firearms (Children’s Defense Fund, p.15). For thousands of teens, death from gun violence is the end of the pipeline. In 2007, 3,042 children and teens died from gunfire in the United States—eight every day—as a result of homicide, suicide or accidental shootings. Almost six times as many children and teens – 17,523 – suffered non-fatal gun injuries, which have serious physical and emotional consequences. (Children’s Defense Fund, p.3)…
