How Critical Guns Are In America
In Leonard Pitts’ article “We Fail Our Children As More Succumb To Guns Every Day” Pitts states his argumentation on ongoing gun fatalities such as, deaths of babies, young children, and young adults. Although he presents his points and opinions, Leonard Pitts’ failed to prove his point and conclude his argument on guns being the problem of our nation.
In Leonard Pitts’ article, the author repeatedly talks about guns being the reason of these innocent children’s deaths. He seems to be a bit biased towards the fact that guns are the only culprit in the equation. What about all the people with guns that save our lives every day? What about our President,
Obama? The people that protect him use guns as a defense. It all boils down to guns and people. More scenarios go into the equation than a person just shooting another person. You have to ask, “Were the people on drugs when they decided to kill this innocent person? Did they just have a bad day? Did they consume any type of alcoholic substance?” In my opinion, guns are not the problem. The problem tends to go back to the individual handling the weapon. One of Pitts’ weaknesses in this article is that there is no other side to his argument. He has stated the bad side towards guns and has been a little biased on the situation. He does not show importance on what guns have done for the United States of America; our military is a big example. They use guns and other firepower to protect our well being. Pitts does state very profound points towards the innocent deaths of not only young children, but grown adults as well. In his closing paragraphs, Pitts’ notes himself, “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” The gun obviously did not grow a hand and point itself at these innocent people; an unstable person handled this weapon, committing a violent and deadly crime. Another point that Pitts brings up in this article is the mentioning of the bible. Some people may ask; “Why would you talk about the bible on a subject like this?” His correlation to the bible is irrelevant as it has nothing to do with the issue on guns and the way in which they affect our nation. It might just be just a way to relate his article to Easter Sunday, involving Christ’s reincarnation, as it was the day that Leonard Pitts’ article was published. But this relation to the bible and the mention of abortion is just not necessary. Christianity is the only religion mentioned in the author’s article.”He’s potty training upstairs in Heaven.” (Pitts) In this statement, a father is imagining his child in Heaven with God, as a way of alleviation and relief on the matter of a lost child. This will make him look very biased, unlike if he would have opened up to cultural and religious diversity on the subject, giving other examples of family losses around the world, including religions such as Buddhism, Judaism, etc. as a way to relate to the audience. In “We fail our children as more succumb to guns everyday”, Pitts’ brings an imperative topic toward the tragic fatalities in the previous months due to guns. Pitts does a fantastic job bringing up the serious situation, but does he conclude it? He goes on and on about the issue but yet he does not succumb a conclusion to fix this ongoing problem. The author concludes that the problem is the guns but in his article, the problem may very likely be the people. Leonard states his part of the argument even though it is a bit biased and inconclusive; he brings up a very important problem in today’s nation.
