Gun control is a controversial and divisive issue in our routine life, not only in the United States, but also all over the world. Basically, gun control refers to governmental efforts to limit or restrict the production, sale, possession and use of guns by private citizens. Some people believe that it is necessary that federal and state laws allow citizens to purchase and possess guns, or even actively require adult citizens to maintain weapons in their house, and periodically to train in their use. However, others think gun control is indispensable in our society because gunshots are the main cause of death in the United States. As for me, I prefer to support the second view because guns are lethal and the fewer people that have them the better. The only function of a gun is to kill. The more instruments of death are removed from our society, the safer we will be. With my research, I found a lot of striking data about guns menacing people’s lives. There should be gun control in the United States because guns are a menace to people’s lives.
Some people believe widespread gun ownership is one of the best deterrents to crime as well as to potential tyranny. Some people even have guns that have been passed down for …show more content…
generations in their family. The opposite is actually true: the more people have guns, the more dangerous people are. The reason is normal citizen’s safe will under threat by criminals who have guns. Normal citizen use guns to protect themselves and society against criminals. However, normal citizen cannot make sure which people are good and which people are bad. They might make mistakes when using guns. If the society is without guns, normal citizen do not need worry about criminals harming them, and criminals do not have powerful tool to harm others.
In fact, guns offer those who are suicidal the easy access to end their lives. For many people, they think guns can make them feel safe because it can help them keep away from dangerous issues. According to the article “It’s Simple: Fewer Guns, Fewer Suicides”, Justin Briggs and Alex Tabarrok state more guns in the society means more suicides probability. They claim, “In a new paper published in the International Review of Law and Economics, we studied the relationship between guns and suicide in the U.S. from 2000 to 2009. Using five measures of gun ownership and controlling for other factors associated with suicide, such as mental illness, we consistently found that each 1 percentage-point increase in household gun ownership rates leads to between 0.5 and 0.9 percent more suicides. In other word, a percentage-point decrease in household gun ownership leads to between 0.5 and 0.9 percent fewer suicides” (Briggs and Tabarrok). According to Numbersleuth, repeated studies have shown that the presence of a gun boosts the risk of gun-related violence in the home (“Guns in the United Stated”). Although people can take their lives in many other ways, guns are one of the easiest and most direct ways to commit suicide. It is no secret that suicidal people struggle with their impulse control. People who have decided to commit suicide usually wanted to escape something. In fact, everything is hard in the world. Giving others and their self a responsibility will create a better life. This is the reason why gun control should be used to reduce suicide probability.
Moreover, guns are also dangerous for young children because they have a tendency to act impulsively based on their emotions. This can lead to tragic accidents and terrible disasters when children get a gun, such as school shooting. The Columbine High School massacre in the U.S.A is a good example. From the website HISTORY, an article called “Columbine High School Shootings” describes how on April 20, 1999, two teenagers went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide (par. 1). The crime was the worst high school shooting in U.S. history and prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety. From Numbersleuth, on the average day in the U.S. 270 people in America, 47 of them children and teens, are shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents and police intervention (“Guns in the United Stated”). Having a gun control law would prevent mass shooting. The reason is young people are very quick in learning interesting things, but disoriented in judging right from wrong. They can get guns from other people very easily. Out of curiosity, they will copy some violent behaviors in media or computer video games, and committing crimes blindly. Legal ownership of guns by law-abiding citizens can easily lead to many unnecessary and tragic deaths. Legally held guns are often stolen and end up in the hands of other people who will use them for crimes.
In addition, guns are putting the whole society in a dangerous place for every citizen. Criminals intentionally shooting on campus are terrible and common issue on news. Students who are living on campus usually do not need worry too much about safety issue because it was the police department’s responsibility to reinforce the safety under government’s surveillance. That is why the government should forbid use of guns. However, campus is not a small place, and no one can control the time and place of students’ activity. For example, in April 11th 2012, near the campus of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, two 23-year-old Chinese students were driving home from their lab, during the carjack, the two students was shot and killed. However, this is a part shooting case, normally, big size shooting on campus always premeditated. Criminals want to get more people’s attention on the issue. Nonetheless, students do not have enough experience and ability to keep themselves safe. Students are the future of his or her family and the society, everyone has the responsibility to keep students away from dangers. For this reason, gun should be control for student’s safe. What is more, in July 20, 2012 morning, Aurora, Colorado was happen a crazy shooting. A male set a fire in a crowded movie theater. In that day, Century 16 Movie Theater was showing a movie, which is The Dark Knight Rises. The unfortunate issue was happen on the movie premiere. When people enjoyed in the movie, the gunman wears gas defense mask rush into the show room. The man thrower a tear bomb first, and then used his gun shooting. This issue caused 12 people was killed and 70 people was injured. The criminal claim he bought about 7,000 rounds of ammunition before the attack issue 60 days. Moreover, the firearms and ammunition used in the attack were legally purchased the gun at the local gun shop, and ammunition was bought from online (par. 1). Therefore, there is another thing shows legally purchase and have gun is dangers for citizens. In fact, there are so many examples in the news. Those are pointing out people to purchase and have guns are dangerous to any other person.
Gun control has aroused great debates in the society, and I informal think gun control is the perfect solution to crime.
Without gun, people can create a safe society to live. Gun brings more damages and more threaten to everyone no matter you have gun or not. Without guns, people cannot easy to take themselves life, and responsible for other people. Without gun, teenagers cannot get any chance to get gun, and do crazy things. Without gun, the society will be safer not only for students, but also for citizens. Gun ownership control by law in all over the world will avoid unnecessary injuries and deaths; especially gun can take life away very easy. Gun is very dangerous and easy to kill. Fewer guns are meaning more
safe.
