In America our background checks are not thorough at all. The current system runs through the police database to check and see if there are any open warrants or violent crimes to see if that person can buy a weapon and that's it! If that person faked their personal identification we wouldn’t even know. “Federal studies have shown that persons imprisoned for firearm crimes get firearms mostly through theft, the black market, or family members or friends, and that nearly half of illegally trafficked firearms originate with “straw purchasers”—people who pass background checks and buy firearms for criminals.” (Background Checks 1) Our government should not only put background checks in place at …show more content…
Weapons can protect yourself and all the people around you. “The number of privately owned guns in the U.S. is at an all-time high, upwards of 300 million, and now rises by about 10 million per year. Meanwhile, the firearm accident death rate has fallen to an all-time low, 0.2 per 100,000 population, down 94% since the all-time high in 1904” (Firearm Safety 1) So even with the increased amount of guns in the United States there is less crime, there is almost 95% less gun violence now with more weapons in the U.S. than there was a century ago without as many guns. A thought that comes to mind when thinking why we have a lot more guns now than we did a century ago, is that because of terrorists events and other evils going on throughout the world people want to feel protected from all of it so they arm themselves so they can prevent theses events from occurring
