Tragic Hero's Short Story: Empire Island
2 Days Later

We were well into the week trip, out in the middle of the sea. I was sitting quietly in my room when I heard an explosion that sounded really close and rocked the ship a little. "What the hell?" I said as we were in the middle of the ocean. Worried, I headed up to the deck to see what was going on. Small talk arose in the hallways with most claiming that it was the engine. On deck, everyone shared the same two emotions: confusion and fear. After a little bit, someone came onto the stage that was already set up for the departure party that took place. The peculiar thing was, he was a normal human being. This would have been perfectly normal anywhere else, but all of the passengers, crew and even the captain were anthros. "Good

"Some of your speculations have been true, I did blow up the engine so that this ship will not be going anywhere," he said. "Why would you want to do that?" someone asked in the crowd. "Because I happen to hate all anthros with a, shall we say strong passion," he said. After he finished the sentence, two other humans brought out someone with a sack on their head. "This is your captain," he said, "Let this be an example to you all." He proceeded to pull out a gun and shot the captain in the head. There was a collective gasp from the crowd. "Soon this will be each and every one of you, one by one," he said pointing at the crowd. "So take my advice, and run for your life, as that is what you will be doing," he said and in a flash of smoke, the three of them disappeared from the stage leaving everyone in

In the article Island Civilization: A vision for human occupancy of Earth, Roderick Frazier Nash describes how the earth that was once a peaceful planet with freedom of living for every specie turned out to be the earth we are living in now. Had human beings more farsighted they wouldn’t have taken wilderness as something that must be controlled. Nash explains how the mankind built fences and roads to control the wild, and soon there came a time when United States Census claimed there was no longer a frontier left that humans haven’t damaged which created a national angst. As Nash says “The notion of wilderness was passing over a tipping point from liability to asset” (Nash 373) This resulted in acts that emphasized the importance of wilderness. Extinction of many other species was observed so acts were taken for the animal protection and various authors started writing books on the negative environmental impact.…

The book The Island at the Center of the World by Russell Shorto was very interesting and gave me a different view on history. I felt the story that was told was very intriguing but it did get confusing at times. There were parts in the book where he would discuss an important person like Adriaen Van der Donck for example in one chapter then he would jump to a new person in the next chapter and then Van der Donck would be mentioned again two chapters later. This was hard to follow because he would jump from person to person and mention many dates that it was hard to keep up with what he was saying. However, regarding his argument that Manhattan is what started America he does an excellent job at proving this. One example of this is “…in…

A tragedy is a story designed to arouse pity or fear in the audience so that upon hearing it, they are cleansed of unsettling emotions which are portrayed in the story. This catharsis is often brought on by hearing of a tragic hero in the story, or a person who is heroic, but is defeated by an error or frailty. In the book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer; the true story of a tragic Mt. Everest expedition, the guide Rob Hall was definitely a tragic hero. His courageous efforts helped many of his clients achieve their dreams by reaching the top of the mountain. Unfortunately, Rob paid a tremendous price to do so.…

Hi, Karen! I'm thrilled to hear back from you! You couldn't have written back at a better time. To be honest, I'm a bit queasy about rereading that last message I wrote because of how all over the place it is and my cringeworthy grammar. If I were to reread this message in another five years might be weirded out just the same. I guess at some point you've got to accept your own quirkiness if you haven't already.…

On June 12, 2006, I was ready to board my flight at San Diego International airport, when I was given a once in a lifetime experience. As I began to board, the captain and first officer were greeting the passengers ahead of me. The line was moving very slowly; however, I eventually made it to the front. The captain and I began talking when all of a sudden he asked a very typical question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” I responded, “I want to be a pilot” and for no apparent reason offered to take me into the cockpit. Inside the cockpit, the captain continued to talk about the plane while pointing to instruments such as altimeter and vertical speed indicator, when I suddenly asked him, “How did he become a pilot?” He responded by saying,…

The main character in the book Treasure Island is Jim Hawkins. If Doctor Livesey had been the main character, the book would have been from a completely different perspective. It would have been more philosophical and there would not have been as much action in the book. Both Jim and doctor Livesey are brave, noble, and are seeking the treasure. Doctor Livesey is much smarter than Jim is and has more experience in the real world where as Jim is a curious child that is extraordinarily courageous.…

In the words of Mark Twain, “….No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one, no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides, other things change, but it remains the same” and “the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored to any ocean.” What islands could inspire such eloquence and longing? The Hawaiian Islands, a chain of eight large islands located in the South Pacific…

If you are shipwrecked on a deserted island, then it would be the best choice to choose bag three, which has a saucepan, three granola bars, and sunscreen. You see, my dad is the captain of the U.S. Navy and has survived on a deserted island, too, for 20 years until his friend came and rescued him. Because of his experience, I asked him which bag I should choose and told him the items in all three bags. He said that the most reasonable choice was bag three because the other bags had objects that you could make out of the island’s resources. Therefore, I suggest that you should trust me and choose bag three.…

As we approached the dock, there were other boaters loading up. The small talk and laughter projected across the water; as well as, the occasional loud thud of someone dropping a cooler or piece of gear. The smell of bait fish and engine exhaust filled the air. I noticed that there was one boat that stood out; it was a classic fishing boat, that appeared a little ways off from the dock, gently rocking as the rippling waves crashed in the sides of it. The captain of the boat leaned on the captain’s chair while drinking what looked to be a thermos of coffee. He was skinny, wore glasses and had the build of a long distance runner. Once he saw my father and I advancing down the gradual paved slope to the dock, he quickly put his thermos down and greeted us. The captain cleared his throat it sounded as if sandpaper was being scratched together. He greeted us with a friendly “good morning”. My father politely replied back with a “good morning”. Once acquainted, I scurried and loaded my equipment on the boat, said goodbye to my father, and then we were off. He floored the engine sending huge rippling waves…
