The slave trade benefited numerous countries before and now. Including the British Empire and the original 13 colonies. The United States of America, Canada and numerous South American countries. Economically these countries wouldn’t be here without the slave trade. But however for the African people this is a very cruel story. The slave trade even has its effects in today’s world. The transatlantic slave trade was one of the greatest crimes against humanity ever. The transatlantic slave trade caused economic social and psychological damage to African society. It destroyed the agriculture of Africa and the industry and production in Africa and destroyed the trade in Africa. It also caused civil wars all throughout Africa. make you feel like you’re in a different century. The slave trade caused Africa to have less manpower to produce buildings and infrastructure which us why Africa looks allot outdated compared to Europe the Americas and Asia. It also effected the population of Africa. In the 19th century the population it would have been double of what it was actually due to the slave trade. Massive resources were also extracted from these countries including gold. In total it’s estimated that 11 million African slaves crossed the Atlantic in slaveshps. The slave trade left a negative stain on everyone’s history. Including the Americas and Africa. In Africa some rural areas have not changed from centuries and are just mud huts. Many of the slaves however were already prisoners of war. During peacetime however it is difficult for Europeans to get slaves. However Africa was pretty much in a constant state of war and civil wars which made getting slaves allot easier for Europeans. Warfare in Africa was the major and primary source for slaves. This was a method of how Europeans benefited off wars and civil wars in Africa. Domestic slavery in Africa was effected by the transatlantic slave trade also.
A good example of this would be what happened in Ghana. However after slave ships left it wasn’t long before European empires colonized Africa, Africa’s morale and ability to defend itself was vastly diminished. Slavery has left a long and devastating impact on African culture and movements and wars in history. For example The American civil war. In South Africa Africans celebrate the end of slavery with musicians in former slave forts. The slave trade also has its devastating effects in the modern world. It changed the structure of The United States specifically forever. Slavery created racial division within the United States and is also is an often cited example in numerous black civil rights movements specifically the ones in the 1960s with Dr Martin Luther King and other black leaders. For example slavery was used as an advancement and the growth of capitalism in The United States which helped turn America into an economic power early
on. Slavery benefited European colonial powers. The new emerging powers in the new world. This is a dark part of history that we must all come to understand so that a brutal system like slavery will never emerge again. Slavery is one of the most evil and cruel systems ever created. Thankfully this institution was ended. Some places it was easier to end some places it was not. In America we had to have an entire war in which over 600 thousand Americans died due to slavery. Not to mention the devastating effects in Africa. Slavery benefited the new world and Europe but not at all Africa Sources Cited: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6504141.stm http://www.open.edu/openlearn/history-the-arts/history/riches-misery-theconsequences-the-atlantic-slave-trade http://old.antislavery.org/breakingthesilence/main/07/index.shtml http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6504141.stm
