Transgender Students
These newly formed bathroom bills that many states are adopting have had a multitude of negative effects on transgender students all around the nation. Kristie Seelman, a professor at Georgia State University, conducted a study among students at the college published in the “Journal of Homosexuality”. In her study, Seelman surveyed the impact of being denied access to restroom facilities among transgender students. Seelman noticed a correlation between transgender students who have been denied accesses to restroom facilities verses students who had not. She found that these individuals were more likely to commit suicide compared to students who had not been denied accesses. Of the people surveyed 60.6 percent of the students said that they attempted suicide when they were not allowed assesses to certain …show more content…
Many responders of the survey also claimed to develop physical problems like kidney infections because they avoided restrooms (Kutner). North Dakota adopted a bill known as House Bill 1008 that states every locker and shower room within public schools must be occupied by students of the same sex. This in return singles out transgender students considering the bill requires students to use bathrooms that corresponded with their biological sex. Like at Georgia State, the bill would affect transgender students immediately. House Bill 1008 also can lead to a student committing suicide by altering their mental health (Ford). The latest group study conducted found that fifty-nine percent of transgender students had no choice, but to utilize facilities that corresponded with their biological sex rather than their gender identity (Ford). In return, sixty-three percent of these students stayed away from restrooms altogether

Service delivery to the transgendered community is generally reported to be poor with hospital and healthcare workers demonstrating prejudicial attitudes once the birth assigned sex of the individual is discovered (OHRC, 2012). The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) frequently report on human rights violations against sexual minorities, including transgendered people. For instance, in June 1998 their newsletter reported the failure of ambulance personnel to assist a transvestite, Marcela, who had been stabbed and was left bleeding in the street for two hours until she died (OHRC, 2012). In social work practice, I find that it is essential that workers support transgendered people in their difficulties accessing shelters and other social service agencies and to coach them on how to maneuver the system so that they can meet their…

Nicole Maine a fifth-grader transgender student together with the Maine Human Rights Commission sued the Oronos’s school district in 2009 after she was forced to use the staff restroom instead of the girl’s bathroom. According to the article, the Supreme Court of Maine ruled in favor of the student, due to the school violating the “Maine Humans Rights Act’s which bans discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity “(The Mercury News, 2016). The article also mentions a very important detail regarding the ruling of this case and that is that prior to this case no state high court had ever established that a transgender person has the right to use the bathroom which they feel identifies their gender (The Mercury News, 2016).…

Regardless of our personal feelings, it is our responsibility as providers of mental healthcare to be aware of the unique needs of trans clients and reach out to make sure we are doing the best we can. The primary impact of these negative beliefs about trans people has been violence and murder. According to the Human Rights Campaign, which began documenting murders of trans people in 2016, each year has resulted in higher numbers of deaths (Human Rights Campaign, 2018). Trans people experience physical violence and sexual assault at higher levels than cisgender populations, and these hate crimes have been shown to lead to suicidal ideation, attempts, and substance abuse (Testa et al.,…

Dean Spade outlines the difficulties trans-gendered individuals have in advocating for their rights to safe spaces and gender inclusive policies. As most trans-gendered people experience some form of abuse and/or trauma, and are unwelcome in many high schools and street outreach programs, their disenfranchisement often turns into a vicious cycle of poverty. Although trans-gendered individuals are part of the LGBT community, there is a strong bias of LGBT political movements towards the empowerment of the wealthy gay individuals, and in turn the oppression of lower class trans-gendered community.…

Over the last decade, new legislation that would affect the LGBTQ community, however, it was not until recently that legislation was passed that directly affects the field of counseling. On April 27, 2016, Tennessee’s Governor Bill Haslam passed a law that gives mental health counselors and therapist to refuse treatment to LGBTQ patients if the patient’s lifestyle contradicts their principles or beliefs unless it is an emergency situation. This is just the latest law that has been passed by southern states that uses religious grounds to target the LGBTQ community for discrimination. A law similar to this is currently not being considered for implementation in South Carolina but as more states decide to implement this type of law it could be.…

Having done this research, I understand that gender neutral bathrooms are desired and should be legal everywhere in the United States and around the world. According to Heartland Trans Wellness Group, places with multiple person gender neutral bathrooms report no complaints, no harassment, and no violence (Yokoyama). The safety of a gender neutral restroom actually does not depend on the use of different genders in the same restroom, but instead depends on the consciousness of people regardless of gender. The idea of switching to or adding gender neutral public bathrooms might feel strange to an amount of people at first; but these changes will go a long way toward improving the lives, health and safety of transgender individuals. Transgender people have the rights to feel comfortable using public restrooms. As I end my exploratory essay, I want to say that we all are created equal. However, some of us have less equality of opportunity than others. It’s time to make a…

Members from the LGBT community are protesting over this “new racism”. Transgender men and women want to be able to use any bathroom they like and if they can’t, they want to have same sex restrooms. Many would argue this is a convoluted subject that no one can’t really determine what is right or wrong. A question to consider for same sex restrooms is, why is the comfort of people in public restrooms privileged over others? While people from the opposing side are question the rape of women and children because a minority of people want to feel comfortable in non-gender…

Although in recent years great progress has been made for LGBT+ students, schools across America still have not eliminated transphobia, nor are they making strong enough efforts to be inclusive to transgender students. Discrimination within bureaucracy, faculty, and students still runs rampant. There is not good enough health education for trans students, there are not enough policies in place to make sure their identities are respected, and there is not enough support in terms of facilities or resources to make trans students comfortable. Trans children need a safe environment, and schools are not currently providing one. Transgender youths are at higher risk for both homicide and suicide, and making sure…

Researchers have found that suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender youth (LGBT) is comparatively higher than among the general population. According to some groups, this is linked to heterocentric cultures and institutionalised homophobia in some cases, including the use of LGBT people as a political wedge issue like in the contemporary efforts to halt legalising same-sex marriages[citation needed]. Depression and drug use among LGBT people have both been shown to increase significantly after new laws that discriminate against gay people are passed.[1]…

“ Almost thirty years ago, most people started coming out in their 20s, well after most had left home and started working. If someone’s family rejected them for being gay or transgender, it may have been emotionally painful, but the person could still likely take care of himself or herself.” (Quintana, Rosenthal, Krehely 2010) In the new millennium, our youth are coming out the closet at younger ages. They are coming out at ages where they are still dependent on their parents and guardians for food, money and shelter. For the LGBT youth in these predicaments, the shunning of their families many times leads to rebellion, trauma, suicide, mental illness, crime, sex trafficking, school drop outs, drug/alcohol abuse, etc. The lack of adequate resources such as shelters that support our youth instead of discriminating against LGBT youth and the ignorance to the issue causes this to be a growing problem. Perhaps a study which investigates the presence of homeless Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered youth in America by raising awareness, increasing specific resources and valuing all human life we can eradicate this major…

In 2010 41% of transgender Americans attempted suicide. 19% of transgender people report being refused medical care and 2% have been violently assaulted in a Dr.'s office. These shocking statistics are from the United Sates. The place that's known to be a melting pot; where every person whether they're black, white, purple, orange, or just plain weird - is treated equally. We have allowed this to happen to our country. How could we be so cruel, heartless, and unsympathetic? Where did our understanding go? The understanding that allowed freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the billion other things that founded this once beautiful country. Put simply, this ongoing transgender battle leaves human beings feeling less than others and abused;…

Chills covered my whole body as I observed professors in their robes for the first time at Centenary College of Louisiana. I am not the likeliest person to pursue a career in academia and research; I am a transman who grew up in Southern Louisiana, who was kicked out of his home, forced to live on the streets, and was told that he could never be an out trans person and thrive in academia. With the help of the Point Foundation, I was able to afford my Bachelor’s, but the inherent politicization of my body resulted in many struggles. One night, I suffered from life-threatening injuries and as the EMS workers rolled me on the gurney they asked for my identification card. Even though I appeared male, legally I was considered to be female by Louisiana law. They both stopped pushing the gurney, and told me another ambulance would bring me to the hospital.…
