Electric drive system is a vehicle that powered by electricity. Its popularity was quite supporting during the late 19th century and early 20th century. It is equipped with an electric motor and a controller. On the other hand, the hybrid car is a drive system which uses more than one power sources to drive the system, thus it runs with a battery powered electric motor and an internal combustion engine. In this report i will describe the features, operations and applications of both the electric and hybrid alternative drive systems.
Electric Drive System
Electric drive system vehicle is an electrically operated. It has an electric motor as the power plant rather than an internal combustion engine. The electric motor is control by a controller and that is why when we look at the electric car and there will not be a tail pipe and fuel tank. The major parts to run the electric drive system is a battery, generator, electric motor, controller, special brakes and wheels and a power cord. The electric motor is operated through the energy conversion by a generator to electricity with an input source supply from the storage rechargeable battery. There will be also be a potentiometers mounted at the accelerator pedal. These potentiometers are variable resistors that inputted information to the controller to deliver the correct amount of power. When the car is stationary, there will be zero power transmitted from the controller; a full power transfer during full acceleration or any range of power in between. Electricity is generated during rotational of the wheels and it is then sent back to the motor while the brakes retail some of the energy lost when the car decelerate or at parking mode. The power cord is plugged into an electrical socket to recharge the battery when the car is parked and this usually takes up to hours to fully charge. They are two type of electrically controlled system and they are the DC controller and the AC controller type.
