Joint cartilage is gradually damaged because the inflammation impairs both its nourishment and articular cavity drainage
MiRNAs play an important role in inflammation, proliferation of synovial cells, and production of MMPs in RA synovial tissues. The expression level of several miRNAs in peripheral blood mononuclear cells correlates with RA …show more content…
Contrary to our findings, Stanzyk’s study found that higher expression levels of Micro RNA-155 repressed the levels of matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP-3) and reduce the induction of MMPs 3 and 1 by Toll-like receptor ligands and cytokines. This difference in findings may be due to the fact that they correlated MMP-3 level with synovial fibroblasts and not plasma mononuclear cells MicroRNA like in our study. Our explanation of such discrepancy may be due to MMP-3 levels in synovium being indeed repressed by higher synovial MicroRNA-155 expression but the amount of enzyme that reaches peripheral circulation later on may be chronically elevated in RA patients who according to results of both studies have elevated peripheral blood micro RNa-155 expression. Notable to say is that in their study, micro RNA expression levels were significantly higher in peripheral blood than in synovial fibroblasts of affected joints. Contrary to our study and to that of Stancyz, Murata found that Plasma microRNA-155 did not yield any significant positive or negative correlation to
