The first thing we did when we performed this experiment was gather our materials. We needed the clear, plastic experiment container, fresh grass, sand, and 20 Sowbugs. Next, we measured the amount of grass…
The American civil war was one of the toughest and deadliest wars in American history. This was where the Confederate States of America fought for their independence. It took place from 1861 when the war broke out till April 9th 1865 when confederate commander Robert E. Lee surrendered at the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House. It was one of the earliest true industrial wars. Industrial knowledge was used to produce weapons in mass-production. Steamships and railroads were used to supply troops and the telegraph which was relatively new was used in communication. Practices of total war were being used in the civil war. This shows that this was a tough war that needed the best…
Emptiness is the feeling you get at 2 A.M when you look at your old Facebook photos, smiling at the old photos of yourself, and realize the people who made you smile, laugh, and giggle are no longer around. You look at these photos as a journey down memory lane but in reality deep down somewhere, you wish you could experience these moments just once more. There’s nothing wrong with having a glance at the past but substituting the past for the present and yearning for it is dangerous. The past has a captivating effect that makes us fall in love it because it helps ignite a sense of happiness and comfortability. You can see the idea of never wanting to let go of the past go in “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. “A Rose…
I am not going to simply state facts and information about things that none of you probably care about, because it does not affect you personally. Well, I am going to speak about something that does have a personal effect on each and every one of you – school and vacation. I bet all of you spend your vacation either going away to some luxurious destination, hanging out with friends and family, or as we all know we all do – just hanging around the house doing absolutely nothing. These are the great qualities of summer vacation; we all look forward to the huge break which means no school and no worries. Yet, this is not as satisfying as it possibly can get. Let me explain how it can be improved.…
As a matter of fact, for the diligent, unceasingly studying students that we are, there would be nothing for us to do during break, a three week long limbo; no beach to go to, no families to visit, no parties to attend, no friends to go out with, no museum to explore, boring sports games to go to, no tv or movies to watch, no music to listen to, absolutely nothing fun to do over break, that is, without homework.…

Does having a closed mind set benefit more than a open mind set? Being open minded is having a mind embarks on new ideas, exploring and arguments. Being close minded is not open to new ideas and exploring. What does open minded and close minded have to do with having a traveling mind set and home mind set? Having a traveling mind set, we carry with us no rigid ideas about what is interesting. A home mind set is being settled in expectations, and assured that we have discovered everything that was interesting to us once before but not anymore. Traveling mindset is similar to having a open mindset because it is open to being detailed and looking at things in a different perspective. Unlike a traveling mindset, a home mind set is having a closed mindset, not paying attention to details, and expecting everything that is already there. According to Alain de Botton, the mindset of home relates to a traveling mindset by the happiness, how to have a traveling mindset at home, and similarities between the two.…
Australia is following the trend as stated in (betterhealth channel ,para.6). “one in five children and adolescents, are either overweight or obese”. Although in countries that are low in economic statues such as Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin-America and Africa obesity are lower (Broom, 2008). The percentage of overweight or obese children increased to 8% in 2007-2008 from 5% in 1995 (Ausstats ,2009, p2,para.2). Children in Australia are spending a lot of time on sedentary pursuits in modern society, sedentary pursuits such as television, gaming gadgets and computers resulting in less activity. (Broom,…

Obesity levels in the Untied Kingdom have reached an all time high with one in every four adults suffering from obesity. Childhood obesity has also drastically increased with 25 percent of boys and 33 percent of girls aged between two and 19 years being overweight or obese. There is little sign of this upward trend in obesity stopping, and it will have a significant impact on the state of the country. It will negatively affect the UK 's economy and more importantly negatively affect the health of the UK 's 63 million people.…
Obesity is a problem in contemporary society because of the rising numbers of people that are classed as being obese. If a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 30-40 this is classed as being obese (National Health Service [NHS], 2012). 23.9% of women and 22.1% of the men in the UK are obese (Hall, 2012). Obesity can cause many physical and mental health problems, thereby incurring costs to the NHS. This essay will address how and to what extent diet is a contributing factor to increasing levels of obesity in the UK. Other factors to be considered will include physical exercise…
One day I had received a letter in the mail. It said, the “World Wide Web” would be coming to the base soon and explained what it was because they did not have it in Japan yet; heck it was still new in America. This was a very big deal because the base was located at the farthest, northern tip of the mainland. It was wedged right between hundreds of rice patty farms and the bottoms of mountains; secluded to say the least. Anything new was big news and this was some of the biggest news in a long time. The next day at work all the talk was about “the web”. Some people I knew had been back to the states recently, heard about it and used it while they were there; they gave me examples of what I could look forward to. Imagine being alive when electricity was invented and you lived in a part of the country that hadn’t had it yet; I imagine it was the same feeling of excitement and not knowing exactly what to expect. This was going to allow me to see news from home as it happened, not days after, write letters to loved ones and get a response in minutes not weeks, and for at least a short period of time; I would be able to escape the tiny little part of the world I was stuck in even if it was only in my mind through the things I read. Days went by and I had to buy a computer. I started remembering all the drama I had with them when I was younger but I was determined to put that behind me. A lot of time had…
It is really amazing how the Internet has changed the world; how social networks are allowing young people to voice their emotions and aspirations for the people to hear them; how fast information can spread for new knowledge to be gain. Because of the Internet, many possibilities have opened up, even in remote parts of the world, because of the Internet.…
Technology is a big part to blame for that situation. “The washing is done automatically, meals can be cooked in the microwave at the press of a button, mobile phones allow us to send instant messages, the internet lets us see family and friends in other countries, and while this all takes place the obesity crisis escalates” (Waldron, 2010. Para. 2). There is no way that this is a coincidence. Since you do not have to leave the house anymore to do anything, people don’t. just getting out and walking to the mailbox to send out a letter is some exercise. “You can go shopping by seat of your comfy computer chair” (Logan, 2010. P.1). Even grocery shopping has become an online task. In theory this should free more time up for people so they could go for a run a run or hit the gym. But like I said, in theory. By using these systems people have become dependant and lazier. They don’t want to leave the house for anything. They sit around and find new ways to get out of everyday tasks that require you to go…
One thing is for certain, we only serve to gain from our travels. Two paths await you when you travel. You can leave behind all the comforts of home and set off for a sheltered location that provides all the same comforts available to you at home. Or you can take the second route. Shed your lifestyle, customs, and certainties and escape into a new world that you can fully embrace. Trust me, the second path is always more fulfilling, plus the stories you come home with will be even better than any spa retreat could ever serve up. Travel should be something you learn from as much as to enjoy. Anyone can travel, but smart travelers will approach everything with an open mind and heart that allows them to see the real beauty in the places they set out to explore. Here are some of my favorite travel quotes to get you thinking differently about the way you travel. On Why You Should Travel Experience travel, these are as education in themselves. Euripides He who does not travel does not know the value of men. Moorish Proverb Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe. Anatole France The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. St. Augustine Motivation To Go Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain Adventure is worthwhile in itself. Amelia Earhart Only those who will…
