Traversing Unexplored Oceans
During my elementary years, I was a student at Angelicum College QC. It is a school with a unique non-graded system; as such, one's scholastic talents aren't fully recognized or acknowledged. That is the main reason why I considered transferring schools for high school. Though hesitant at first, I strengthened my decision with the thought of experiencing something different because as said by Andre Gide, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”
When I was accepted into St. Theresa's College QC as a freshman, I admit that I was scared—terrified, even. I didn't know what to expect at all for I had been a student of a non-graded school since Prep. Scenarios, ranging from being left behind in lessons to receiving failing marks, entered and filled my mind and all too soon, classes officially started. I struggled, to say the least. Everything was new to me—the grading system, the quizzes, the assignments, and the people. Eventually, I managed to adjust to my new environment and got a better hold of myself, which I partly owe to the warmth my classmates welcomed me with. Despite being shy, insecure and a bit reserved, they made me feel as if I was part of the STC community from the very start. It was them who helped me adapt easily and motivated me to work hard and showcase my talents. At the end of my freshman year, I was proclaimed an outstanding student of the year, which I have maintained until the end of my third year. This recognition made me realize that I actually had the capacity to excel at something, which I was not aware of during my Angelican years. Thus, I gained a much needed confidence boost and a more positive outlook towards life. After that, I opened myself up to trying new things such as dancing, playing the guitar, singing, and photography.
