The use of trenches came about because of the new evolving technology did not allow for older mobile tactics unless you did not mind losing a thousands of men at a time. At a glance they look like long tunnels dug into the ground but were much more complicated than what they seem. They served as a home for the troops, and a defensive position against artillery and other gunfire. Trenches came in many different sizes and served different purposes, “small trenches connect dugouts or covered firing positions with each other. Strong Points consist mainly of dugouts and communications trenches, often arranged as a perimeter defense.” (Trench Warfare). The use of trenches caused the war to be very immobile with lead to many casualties as it the use of artillery and gas allowed for a long rage attacks straight into the enemy's trench. Trenches were not a clean place and because of its deplorable conditions many disease come from it like trench foot. Any soldier can get it if they as long as they wore their wet footwear and lead to many casualties, “over 20,000 men in the British Army were treated for trench foot.” (First World). Trench Warfare only lead to stalemates between countries as one army would try to capture the others trench but be forced to retreat after a counter attack.
