Trends in Human Resources As any professional knows, there is no way to stay the same and stay ahead of the competition. Staying stagnant will almost always lead to failure and it is often the easiest way to kill a business and to kill employee productivity. As with cars, fashion, and pop culture, business too has trends; what’s hot this year can easily fizzle out by next year.
Political environments and many other external factors play a role in what trends are hot in business and human resources. We will look at the sectors of training, performance management and career management. Within each sector, we will look at current trends in the industry and finish by looking at what is the largest trend to impact Interactions Marketing.
Training
We will first look at training and discuss three specific trends that are affecting the training within organization for 2013. In SHRM’s article, Seven Trends Expected to Influence Training in 2013, they identify tighter budgets, higher employee expectations and globalization for the trends that follow.
Demand for basic skills training is expected to re-emerge The first trend to take shape in 2013 is the “Demand for basic skills training is expected to re-emerge” (Seven, 2012). By this, the authors are talking about how many companies are now focusing on providing training to employees that “get back to the basics” if you will. They are focusing on training employees on things like effective communication, conflict resolution and management skills. The reason for this trend is due to the reviving economy that we are currently in (Seven, 2012). While we were deep in the recession, basic programs took a back seat to the more important strategic trainings. High unemployment also means that companies were able to hire on more qualified applicants, many applicants who already had these skills.
Companies will turn to training to build employee loyalty Many companies are now looking to offer different and attractive

    As companies continue to try to come up with a plan for remaining profitable, some are overlooking one of their best opportunities due to their short sightedness and obsession for short term gain. It is the very asset which most firms claim is their most important and the one which provides them their competitive advantage. It is also, in some companies, the asset which is most mistreated and neglected as it is the most costly. It is the company’s employees. I don’t know of any company which would not state that employees and their knowledge of the company, its products and services, processes, policies and procedures are an important part to its competitive advantage and the reason for its success. Then the question that must be asked and answered is why then, in down economic times, is one of the first things cut in a corporate budget the training and development of this most valuable asset? The very asset which provides the company its competitive advantage. The one which, if not continually developed, will impact its growth for a considerable length of time. Management, rightly so, wants to see the impact of any venture to the bottom line. If training is the first item cut, it must mean its impact is not benefiting the company, or at least not being seen as such. Training must be designed, implemented and assessed in such a manner to provide a positive impact on the bottom line. It is therefore the responsibility of those in charge of training to be cognizant of how and why adults learn, so that training provides a positive impact on a company’s profitability and not seen as a necessary burden which only drains the company’s coffers.
