As expected, the control group had a feeding rate between that of the higher and lower light intensities. Buikema (1973) mentions that light intensities that exceed a certain threshold tend to suppress the filtering rate. We theorized that their feeding rate increased in the dark environment because it reflects their natural habitat. Populations of D. magna perform diel vertical migration, which means that they only spend the night in surface layers of the water and migrate downwards into the lower water layers during the day (Dodson, 1990; Haney, 1985). The ultimate cause for this is to protect themselves from predators. The proximal cause is the change in light intensity. D. magna present with photosensitive behaviour and they tend to move into areas of low light (Dodson, 1990). Young et al. (1984) report a decrease in the rate of limb beating when exposed to increased light intensity. The rate of limb beating directly affects the rate of filtration. If there is a decrease in the rate of limb beating then the feeding rate will also…
This lab was testing different methods to prevent bean beetles form infesting a chickpea harvest. They wanted to find something that would protect the crop from this invasive creature. To do this they created 3 replicate experiments which contained 25g of seeds each group with a different genotype, and 5 newly hatched adult C. maculatus were added to the jar. They continued to check this on a weekly basis, at the end of the experiment they found that the results where quite different for each jar, and that all of them were not immune to the bean beetle.…
The sides of the containers were covered to prevent interaction with the outside environment. A scale was placed underneath the container (with the zero marker lined up with the end of the container) so that we could measure the distance of the fish from the location of the mirror in centimeters. After the reflective side of the mirror was placed in front of one of the panels, we measured the fish’s reaction to its own image for five minutes, specifically; time of operculae flare, time spent in broadside display, number of ninety degree turns, and the average distance of the fish from the mirror (the measurement was taken every 5 seconds for the 5 minute duration and averaged).…
In this experiment we used a variety of different materials. The first was the microscope. This was used to view the water flea at a magnification of 100x. Without this we could not have seen the heart rate of the flea. Next, we obtained two glass micro slide. These were used to hold the Daphnia as we continued with the experiment. Before being able to get the Daphnia onto the slides we had to draw them up with two pipettes. A stopwatch was then used to determine the control, as well as variable 's heart rates. Lastly, let 's not forget the star of the show, the Daphnia itself. Without these little critters the whole experiment would be a bust.…
The age and anatomy of Pappochelys has made it clear to Schoch and other researchers that it is a transitional creature, one that bridges the evolutionary gap between its lizard ancestors and its turtle descendants. These creatures are an important contribution to science in the study of evolution according to Schoch. They can reveal how specific features, such as the turtle's carapace, evolved over millions of years.…

My experience with this optional observation lab was a great experience overall, just as I had expected it to be. I was much more interested in participating in the observations versus sitting in a classroom every week and attending the labs like in 1010.…
The egocentric attitude was present in all the grades as well as the imaginary audience, especially in the females. I observed an English class where they were working on their persuasive essays. The students were asked to do a one minute practice speech on their persuasive argument when the teacher asked for a volunteer to begin no one wanted to do it, but the most physically developed and popular males and females volunteered first. They seem more confident than their underdeveloped peers and wanted to be the center of attention they were desperate for attention especially the attention of the opposite sex. The underdeveloped females seemed less confident and didn’t want to participate. The ones that did participate had trouble keeping eye…
The experiment was done at the University of Texas at Tyler in the BEP building. There were three different tanks with Betta fish and each group performed the assigned experiment with the fish. The first step was to test how aggressive the fish was by slowly moving a mirror to the side of the fish tank and observe the fish response to its own reflection. This procedure lasted for one minute and then the results were recorded. The next step was to take a piece of construction paper that was similar in color to the fish and construct a model to the fish, glue it onto the applicator stick and to slowly present the model to the fish. While presenting the model to the fish, results of how the fish acted toward to stimuli was being recorded by another group member. When the observation was over we took responses that we conducted with the fish we used in the experiment and compared the results of another group’s responses.…
In this experiment daphnia magna a semitransparent fresh water crustacean, are used to study the effects of water, alcohol and caffeine on heart rate. Daphnia was placed on a clean deep well slide. This was placed under the microscope and brought into focus on the best objective and light contrast. The heart rate was observed and counted within 15seconds and recorded on a table.…
Using the UK as an example of a wealthy country, increases in wealth over the last 25 years and government interventions have not been able to reverse severe inequalities in income, prosperity and life chances. Those on the margins live in a society characterised by accelerating rates of change and new forms of poverty and deprivation.…
The objective of this lab is to observe all of the provided chordates and vertebrates and describe them in the lab including a picture. Students are to know and understand the characteristics of each group and what makes them unique.…

Describe the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates.Describe how sugars are broken down and used in the body.Discuss the benefits carbohydrates provide to the body.Provide a slide containing examples of foods that are considered healthy sources of carbohydrates. Include information on one of the following disorders related to carbohydrates: lactose intolerance, diabetes, or hypoglycemia. * Include a definition, how it affects the body, and some courses of action used to treat and manage the disorder.…
The Stanford Prison Experiment was an experiment to see what would be the psychological effect of becoming a prison guard or a prisoner. To do the experiment they set up a prison in the basement of Stanford’s Psychology Department Building. They used a sample of 24 students from the U.S. and Canada who were in the Stanford area and wanted to make $15 a day for participating in the study. To begin the experiment the boys were divided into two group half guards and half prisoners. To help get a better prison environment they called the services of experienced consultants. To closely monitor the prisoners they videotaped and recorded the events.…
Observing this toddler has taught me many things. I was able to learn about the different forms of child development and what it looks like. One of the major forms of child development is physical. The child experiences major child development during the first two years of life. During this time the child experiences gross-motor development. The skills obtained from these developments are the ability to run, jump, catch etc. During the observation of the infant I was able to witness some of these developments. For example over the course of my observation I noticed the infant had significantly improved his ability to stand up and sit down on his own. He was struggling when the observation but seemingly got more comfortable doing it over and over again. The walking stared to become natural and more second nature however it was awkward and difficult when the infant just started. The infant also became more comfortable gripping and grasping objects. Another form of development observed was cognitive development. This development includes the ability to think rhetorically and the ability to communicate with others. The child made significant development in this field he was able to learn more words and express his thoughts in an understanding manner. The infant’s ability to play and interact with other children has increased. His memory has increased and is able to remember certain things over time his able to memorize more things and can recognize familiar faces. The final form of physical development is social-emotional development. This stage involves dealing with other children and being able to pay attention to adult figures. The infant is able to obey the adults and other persons in charge. They also become more comfortable at expressing their emotions. The child is also able to learn empathy and…
