True Patriotism
Patriotism is defined as a devoted love, support and defense of one’s country; national loyalty. Although, this definition is a good way to define patriotism, it is not the only way to define true patriotism. Patriotism can be defined differently to people. It is something that we as Americans have to feel within. Sometimes we as people have to actually experience things first hand rather than someone tells a person about their own precipitance of something. Different people having different stances on patriotism, make the identification of true patriots very interesting. True Patriotism is loving your country and being open mined that other people love their country the same as well. People, who are not truly patriots from within, are always trying to portray their pseudo patriotism by only remembering their country and national identity, on the Independence Day and other national occasions. On the other hand, the rest of the year is spent by constantly neglecting the responsibilities and liabilities as citizens and patriots of the country. This is what the other means by the term pseudo patriotism. In this short story Goldsmith was use to seeing real and true patriots who did not require showing off their intentions and feelings about heir relationship with the country. There silent and hidden act are enough to portray their patriotic nature and these acts also play the role of contributor towards the country (Goldsmith).
The arguments and the statements that the pseudo patriot tried to pass were difficult not to contradict or argue with, but that specific person was not ready to accept that argumentative discussion. The person according to the author had a very strange and fake kind of sense of patriotism, which did not make any sense to Oliver Goldsmith. This is one way in which we can see the differences the author has portrayed, between the pseudo and true patriotism. The one, who does not have the real sense of belonging to the country, usually does
