Essay Topic 4 After being diagnosed with ALS, Morrie slowly started losing many key abilities such as walking and eating. Morrie knew that one day he would have to be assisted in one of the most personal tasks, wiping his own behind. Unlike many of these other losses, this loss of ability scared Morrie the most. I know that Morrie’s enlightened words will stay with me forever. His phrases like “Accept what you are able to do, and what you are not.” and “Learn to forgive yourself before you die. Then forgive others.” are truly words to live by. Tuesdays with Morrie is written with three key parts; Mitch and Morrie’s backstory labeled by school terms, flashbacks, and the Tuesday meetings message. Through this setup I was able to fully understand Mitch’s and Morrie’s character, their past, and about Morrie’s priceless life lessons he taught to Mitch.
