lower is left to fend for themselves and little to no support is given. People in lower class position are always surrounded by negativities and are left to wonder if there isn’t a brighter future.
The caged bird represents the lower class wanting to have a better outcome on life, it’s only way to do something is to sing, sing can be also taking action, rioting, trying to get the attention of the needs of the caged bird. The rose can also be seen as the second chapter, the bird and rose can be interchange, perhaps the caged bird breaks out the cage, the bird would not be caged but free to roam the endless sky, the rose with all it’s will was able to break out of the solid concrete and grow in a place that no one believe it
could. What differs from the poems is that one seems to suggest that oppressed was able to break from whatever it was being held down from, it was able to overcome all the diversity and make it out to success, while the other speaks of the desire of the caged, and how the caged feels and how it only thing that keeps it going it’s the dream to be free. The rose that grew from concrete is a poem by Tupac Shakur, Tupac was a rapper, actor, poet whom was gunned down in 1996. Tupac was an inspiration to many people, especially those living in poverty as he was seen as a rag to riches story. The reason for choosing this poem is because it’s inspires me every time I read it, myself growing in a lower class neighborhood can relate to the rose. The rose is everyone that has been written out, told that they cannot achieve anything; they are caged to the street. The rose can represent also the desire one has to become a better person, to let go of the past. Everyone is always on a path to be more understanding of the world around, but we are also chained by stereotypes and racism that still lingers. These negatives can regurgitate qualities that aren’t present anymore, and trapped the person or culture. Reading more into the title “the rose that grew from concrete”, we visually how impossible it is for a thing as beautiful and natural as rose can grow in a man made substance like concrete. We realize how hard this rose must grow to break out the concrete, the strength it needs to get out of the caged ground it lays. I can feel this will of the rose, how much it wants to get that fresh air, how much it wants to be hit by the sun. This poem visually sets your mind to think of this rose trying to reach the surface. One of my favorite line in the poem is “ Proving nature’s law is wrong it learned to walk with out feet” How I interpret this is that the rose as us, is proving everyone wrong, it grew without anyone help. It ties back to the idea I had, that some people try to keep one down or caged, they envy the success or are afraid of seeing someone become something out of themselves. I can relate to this, in elementary I was always look down, because I was able to understand that their were life beyond the “Hood”. I was dedicated and never gave up, I wanted to go to college so bad, to make something out of myself, and I was still belittled. I could not understand why people would act a certain way, but I came to channel that negative energy into positivity in my life. Another line I found to be very intriguing is “But by keeping its dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air” I never let go of my dream to go to college, I never let go of who I wanted to become, I did not want what my society offer, I wouldn’t be caged, I wouldn’t let my dream die and still to this day I am not letting them die. Just like the rose I dream for fresh air, I desire to become something out of nothing, I know why the caged Bird Sings is a poem by Maya Angelou; she is perhaps one of the most well known poets in the world. Maya Angelou work consisted of work of her childhood and early adult experiences. In this poem we are given two things, a free bird and a caged bird, the free bird is able to soar the sky, it has all the freedom in the world to be a bird. It’s able to fly the open sky and hunts for their own food. This free bird represents to us the success, we are free to do what we want, we aren’t chained down to restrains, we can do what makes us happy. On the other hand, the caged bird is oppressed filled with anger, yearning to leave the cage, he is filled with jealously and only dreams are able to keep the caged bird sane. The dreams are filled with freedom and desires of the bird to be in the open. One of my favorite lines in the poem is “ But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream” I think this can interpreted as how shallow the caged bird is, how it’s lost and its becoming nothing but a corpse of itself. Words like grave and nightmare and scream give this horrible idea of how this caged bird has manifested, it is as if the bird would rather be dead than suffer to be in cage. I can relate to this to people who left go of the desire to have a better outlook on life, they did not have the will to break out the cage, they succumbed to the negativity. They are left to live a life that has shattered dreams and anger filled for the world for this life. My brother to me was a caged bird that wanted to be free, but was trapped by the society he lived in, he was killed in a drive by. He told us he wanted to let go of the gang activities and live a better life, but was trapped by the negativity, which eventually led to his death.
