Turkey: Should Be a Member of European Union?
Şafak Tahmaz

TURKEY: SHOULD BE A MEMBER OF EUROPEAN UNION? Turkey has been trying to be a member of European Union for ages . In recent years, the progress has gained speed, and a great number of revisions has been done. Although some people think that whatever Turkey does, it will never become a full member, I think they are wrong because if Turkey does what it requires, it will be accepted to the Union, and I am one of those who support Turkey's membership since I believe that Turkey should join the community because if it happens, Turkey will reach high living standarts and get new facilities. Of course, some people still think that Turkey will not be able to join European Union because of the ıÜüdifferences in fundamental values and culture as Turkey is a Muslim country, and are anxious about that if it becomes a member of the Union, they can use their own identity. However, I believe that this fear is groundless since this problem can disappear if Turkey adapts the regulations without making any concession in their values, and this is possible, of course. The only problem can just be the process of being accustomed to these new regulations, but in time, it will be overcomed.

When Turkey becomes a member of the Union, European's doors will be opened to Turkey, and this will develop the relationship between Turkey and the other member countries. In parallel with this, import and export between the countries will increase, and of course it will affect Turkey's economy in a positive way. On the other hand, this process will have a really good impact on Turkey's prestige as its economy will grow, and the relations will get better.

In terms of education, there will be lots of improvement in the process of adaption to the Union. Turkey will get the chance to reach the European's education standarts, and the problems about education will be solved by both the supplied fund and the revisions. Also, with the

When determining whether or not Turkey should be a part of Eastern Europe or the Middle East is a tough question. It is hard to determine this because although Turkey’s actual location is in the Middle East doesn’t exactly mean that it has to be a part of the Middle East. I think that when it comes to determining whether Turkey is a Middle Eastern country or a part of Europe is based on the shared characteristics. These characteristics include language, ethnicity, culture etc. By doing this it may separate Turkey into two different…

With the change over to the Euro notes and coins now complete across the "Euro-zone", twelve countries that have adopted the Euro as their currency, the debate over whether to adopt the single currency in Britain continues. There will be those who argue that the introduction of the single currency is merely the next logical step in the development of a truly single market, and that by joining, Britain would gain a voice in what could eventually become the world 's most powerful economic zone. Others believe that a successful common market is not dependant on the adoption of a single currency, which they see as merely another irrevocable step towards the political union of Europe. But the main focus of the debate centers on the parameters of macro economic objectives.…

First of all, one of the positive points is that the EU countries work together by handling such common problems as nuclear safety, long-term employment, development of rural areas of its member states, integration of young people into working life. Apart from this, joining the EU presents significant economic opportunities in the form of a larger market, free movement of goods and capital. Also, with it being a single market, there are no barriers between the other countries. With the removal of custom it enables producers to cut production costs, which results in export increases.…

The day has come. January 1, 2011 and Estonia has officially joined the Euro zone. There are mixed emotions with many worried about the debts of Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Greece and Spain threatening Estonia. In these days of market hysteria over the great European debt crisis Estonia has stood tall as a success story. Estonia's Prime Minister Andrus Ansip sees a positive for Estonia joining the Euro to attract Foreign investment can expect to draw increased foreign investment. Ansip sees Estonia joining the Euro would also benefit the other Baltic nations Latvia and Lithuania. Other key nations in the Baltic region are Sweden and Finland. The Baltic zone is in recovery mode after it suffered a brutal slump that has seen the IMF give loans to Latvia and the three nations all apply severe austerity measures. Currently we have a ring of fire encircling the PIIGS below. It highlights the dichotomy of Europe as nations look to join the pan-European currency while others are barely hanging in there such as Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy. We even had France’s little Romeo Sarkozy threatening to leave. Estonia joining Euro to attract foreign investment is an obvious bonus to the EU in its currentfinancial contagion crisis. Personally there is the worry of being aligned to another huge power given Eesti's proud resolve for independence. However the EU is not the Soviet Union. One hopes Estonia is not joining a European Titanic as many suggests. One thing we do know is the Estonian people have shown they can overcome incredible adversity. One suspects they will not need the Titanic lifeboats that Ireland, Greece and Portugal have been thrown.…

    Turkey Study Tour

It was an eye opening experience for me to participate in study tour with new friends from USA cohort as we spent four days explored Turkey together. Through this study tour, we were able to meet with and pick the minds of great individuals in Turkey. I am especially grateful for having the opportunity to experience Turkish hospitality, culture, government, education, business, arts, media, history, religion and their people first hand. This is something that I cannot find in “Lonely Planet” travel advises. Turkey is a country where history (Ottoman Empire, Artutuk) and religion (conservative fashion, cuisine, architecture, call to prayers five times daily & etc) play a big role in shaping today’s Turkey. It even impacted their ways of lives and daily conduct. There is some similarity with Asia but still a difference. Beside what I can take away from Turkey, study, learning and interacting with USA cohort spice up the learning experience. They brought me to think from ankles I never think before and definitely help to open another door of learning. These two things are things that I can take away and no one else can take it away from me. My perception towards Turkey and American are making a big turn and I must say I like this positive change.…
