Readings: Textbook chapter 4 and 5, Engadget article posted on WebCT (http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/19/belkin-pleas-for-mercy-over-paid-amazon-reviews-deception/), and the Auschwitz Article posted on WebCT (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,742013,00.html)
Briefly answer each question below. The assignment is designed to prepare you for tutorial, so be prepared to discuss each item further in class. The TA will collect the assignment at the beginning of the tutorial and marks will be counted towards your assignment mark. After doing all the reading, you should be able to complete this assignment in 20 -30 minutes.
1) Briefly provide a definition for intention.
2) In Engineering, should interior intentions really matter? Are exterior actions more important?
3) In the Engadget article, the story covers how Michael Bayard paid people to write positive reviews for his company’s products on Amazon and other sites. Is this action any different than a commercial that claims the product is great?
How do intentions factor into this case?
Would your answer change if these paid reviewers would have written positive reviews regardless of being paid?
Would the action be worse if people were paid to write bad reviews about competing products from other companies?
4) According to the textbook, when ranking the virtues, which virtue is ranked first? Do you agree?
5) On page 78 and 79, the textbook has a case called Scientific Tests Using Animals. Answer the two questions asked at the end of the case… What moral importance would you assign to animals compared with humans?
What criteria would you use to judge the acceptability of a given animal test?
6) The debate over military engineering often
