Tweens Persuasive Speech

Although many would argue with giving “tweens” a mobile device, I’m in agreement that allowing children to be granted access to cell phones will aid them in becoming more independent and empower individuals as well as give parents a sense of security. According to Deborah Pendergast, a representative of a large telecommunications company states “A 2012 survey conducted by the National Consumer League finds that sixty percent of children between the ages of 8-12 already have cell phone. Pendergast also expressed in her speech, “ “Tweens” are you ready for Cell phones?” that she receives numerous inquiries from parents on this topic and tells them: “It all depends on the child, of course, but in general, age 10 is just about right.”
Caroline Knorr, from the group Common Sense Media states,” We want our kids to be independent, to be able to walk home from school and play at the playground without us…” She continued on to say, “We want them to have old-fashioned, fun experience of being on their own, and cell phones can help that.” This supports the notion that giving “tweens” cell phones will help in the development of their sense of independence.
It is also is a time to give them the opportunity to earn the trust of a parent.
