Two Examples Of Non Diegetic Sounds
1.We see examples of visible, or diegetic sounds, constantly in this movie. Specifically, in the trash compactor scene when Luke and Han Solo are in a fight with the stormtroopers, the sound of the lasers are a direct result from the action occuring on screen. Another example is the music that the Bith band is playing at the cantina. Anyone present at the cantina would hear it, so it definitely is a diegetic sound.

2. An example of a non diegetic sound takes place when Luke is in a fight with Darth Vader. They are on board the Imperial Star Destroyer, and loud sounds of the ship and metal clinking is prominent in the background, seemingly coming from nowhere, since it is not a result of the onscreen action.

    Sound in Napoleon Dynamite plays a vital role in defining characters, particularly Napoleon's. Additionally, considerable portion of the significant sound in the film occurs in the music. In every scene inside a house, there is a very subtle background of birds chirping. This emphasizes the fact that Napoleon lives a rural community, rather than a busy suburb or city setting.…

    In the film they used 45 and 90-degree shutters to sustain actors movements and expressions and a certain crispiness in the explosions to make them look more realistic. The shots used in this film were mainly mid shots and close ups to show the expression of the soldiers being scared and when they are shell-shocked which adds to the realism. The location also looks so real where they filmed it because it looks really rundown and it does look like a real wasteland/battlefield type location. I think that the film became desaturated with the dulled effect was to bring out the tragedy and emotions in the film. By adding this desaturation, it made the film look more explicit, violent and disturbing. Sound is key to add to the realism in Spielberg’s film because music plays a big role in films and the audience judge whether they like the film or not, purely because of the sound used. In the opening battle scene, you can immediately hear gunfire fulfil the air as they are charging towards the beach. The sound mainly includes gunfire, and bomb explosions. This is a good technique that they have used because it makes the dialogue barely audible and the reason why the director has done this is to demonstrate and emphasise to the audience the reality of difficulties in the war.     I was very surprised that nowhere in the film was non-diegetic sound because a lot of documentaries use this to comment during certain parts in the film. Nonetheless with the use of diegetic sound Barbara Kopple is able to illustrate what they went through and why it hurt the band so much. A really good example of this is near the end of the film when Martie Maguire is shown crying and telling us how if Natalie were to say that she is done with the band that she would leave and move on with her career. The story is not what gets us to feel for her it is the diegetic noise of her crying and sobbing over the fact that she feels bad that Natalie cannot get over what she did. Throughout these fifteen seconds we stay focused and truly listen to what she is saying.
