Two models of mothers in the Bible: Hannah and Mary
Many Christian mothers are making an effort to be a good mother. Also they want to nurture their children in God’s way. Therefore, they usually study a model mother in the Bible. In fact, many mothers in the Bible had played an important role until the Jesus Christ came up. However, two mothers in the Old and New Testaments have something in common. They are Hannah, a mother of Samuel and Mary, who gave birth to Jesus Christ. They can be role models for Christian mothers because they have a similarity in terms of their patience, desire for the kingdom of the God, and faith. Firstly, Hannah and Mary were women of patience because they endured a difficulty in the process of bearing and raising their son. Marie must have been hurt by a certain distance between herself and her son. Letting go of the special son was something that Marie struggled with all her life in contrast with Hanna. Marie’s patience marked a climax on the cross where Jesus was crucified for the mankind. Consequently, Hanna and Marie were patient enough to overcome difficulties in raising their special son. Secondly, Hanna and Marie were women of desire for the kingdom of the God. The songs of Hanna and Marie clearly show their patriotic spirit towards the Israel as a God’s chosen nation. In the song of Hanna, she speaks of salvation, a society of equality, and other values of the kingdom of God. On the other
