One of the many types of campus violence that occur is sexual violence. Sexual violence can be broken down into a few categories like sexual harassment, sexual assault, campus dating violence and even stalking. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 19348 cases of rape were reported across India in 2006, up from 15,847 in 2005 and yet around 71% of rape crimes go unreported (InfoChange India).Women are more inclined to be on the receiving end of sexual violence compared to men. According to the National Violence Against Women Survey, more women(25%) reported that they were raped or physically assaulted by a current or former spouse, cohabiting partner, or date in their lifetimes compared to men(8%) (Facts About Violence). In Delhi, November 2002, a female student of the Maulana Azad Medical College was dragged off a road at knife-point and was gang-raped inside the confines of the Khooni Darwaza, a state-protected monument located opposite the college gate (India Together). If allowed to continue without any effort taken to stop, sexual violence could have profound immediate and long-term consequences on a woman’s physical and mental health.
