“Choose a medical condition that’s interests you and research it. Write about the possible uses of hypnosis in the treatment of the condition as you see them”.

In this essay I hope to demonstrate a good understanding of this horrid chronic illness. It affects the person, both physically, and mentally. Also how hypnosis can help to ease the symptoms. This illness can be definitely defined as chronic. This is diagnosed because it is permanent, can be progressive and will almost certainly change a person’s life. It can make permanent changes to the patient’s body and is rarely cured.
The disease I am going to write about is ulcerative colitis. This will be represented as U/C throughout this essay.
This debilitating illness can cause not only great pain but also the patient will encounter a great deal of anxiety, stress and mental and physical exhaustion. U/C is a long term condition, where the colon and rectum become inflamed. It is a particularly nasty disease that flares up without warning and can make the patient needing the toilet immediately. There is no wait, the patient must go. The flare up is like having a severe stomach bug and can drag on for weeks. It ruins holiday plans, causes lengthy absences from work and debilitate all aspects of a person’s life.
The disease is often diagnosed when people are in the late 20s and early 30s, or in the 50s. It seems to affect both women and men equally, and is estimated that 1/420 persons in the UK will develop the disease, you are more likely to be affective if a close relative already has the disease. It is more common in the Jewish communities and black race persons. This is unclear to the reason why, as to the reason why it is rarer with those of an Asian background.
The colon is the large intestine {bowel}, and the rectum is the end of the bowel where stools are stored. Small ulcers can develop {ulcerative} in the colons lining

The onset of IBD is greatest in early adulthood, with peak incidence among those aged 18 to 35 [1]. Diagnosis at this stage of life has a significant impact on employment and psychosocial functioning of the affected. Up to 25% of cases of IBD are diagnosed during childhood [2]. There are approximately 1.4 million Americans living with IBD, with a prevalence of 201 and 238 per 100,000 for CD and UC respectively [3].
