The film, Unfinished Sky by Peter Duncan together with the novel, Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta and Bruce Dawe’s poem, ‘Homecoming’, demonstrate that the consequences of conflict are exceedingly varied. The audio, visual and language techniques used by the composers throughout these texts allow an in depth exploration of the consequences of conflict. The texts show that conflict can result in a positive outcome, enabling growth and allowing an individual or society to move on. The final scenes of the film display both a negative effect of conflict and a positive outcome. During the climax of the film, a negative consequence of conflict is displayed through the death of one of Tahmeena’s previous captors. With the use of audio techniques such as diegetic and non-diegetic sound, suspense and tension is created which efficiently enhances the negativity of the scene. For example, the loud diegetic breathing of John and Tahmeena whilst in hiding allows suspense to be felt by the audience. Following this, both characters engage in a chase with the intruders. The fast pace and loud volume of the music is able to intensify the danger of the situation. This is followed by a ‘Western-style” shootout which ultimately leads to the death of one of the intruders, successfully conveying the devastating consequences which can occur as a result of physical conflict. Alternatively Unfinished Sky explores the positive outcomes which can occur as a result of conflict. The central character, John, deals with inner conflict over the death of his wife throughout the film. As Tahmeena enters his life, both characters experience inter-personal conflict. Because of Tahmeena and the inter-personal conflict her appearance created, John is able to undergo a growth during the conclusion of the film.
