Unit 1 Journal
Unit 1 Journal 1) I see myself as a strong group member because I enjoy working with others and have no problem keeping the peace if needed but like to reach a conclusion that works for all with as little drama as possible. I’m not afraid to speak my mind but I bite my tongue and try not to offend. My behavior is usually to make sure everyone agrees on the task at hand and to be cooperative with all. 2) Well spoken, logical thinker and fountain of facts due to having no life except for reddit’s today I learned ( reddit.com/r/todayilearned ). Despite previous comment I tend to keep myself in check until I can fully back my facts and I have learned through many different “quarrels” that nothing is worth a fight and everything and everyone deserves a turn to speak and be listened to. 3) Taking notes for groups simply due to horrible writing skills, I tend to debate too much on things with a group because I’m stuck in a logical linear path. I handle notes ok as long as I can type otherwise I tend to back down and be quite and try to make it legible. The debating I shut my mouth once I realize I am going too much into it before I hurt feelings. I feel I handle this well but was a very large problem in the past costing me friends over the years has taught me otherwise. 4) Helping stress the importance of facts without offending others is my best/worst strength. I wish to become better at it so I don’t sound like a dick when saying things. I would like to be a little more timid since I feel like I do intimidate others a lot. Becoming a better note taker would be nice but unrealistic. Get over my phobia of speaking (yes phobia as I have had nervous break downs and literally dropped out of school for it.).

I have learned from my areas of growth and turned them into strengths.. I try to stay quiet and not talk about dumb things or just keep quiet in general. Also, my impatience has actually helped me learn how to deal with certain people and work certain jobs. Now instead of getting mad and upset from little kids not listening I just learn to take their attention away from whatever they are doing wrong. My strength, of trying to get the job done that is put in front of me, has helped me become better prepared for the real world and what is to come after high school and college. Other strengths which were the inability to say no has helped me do well when working outside of…

One of my huge weaknesses is low self-esteem and confidence (Bethel University, 2014). Having this as a poor skill in life makes a lot of the other skills hard to conquer. I think if I had a higher confidence level then maybe I wouldn’t struggle so much with public speaking, management of people and seeking support from others. I don’t give myself enough credit and I am hard on myself. Another weakness that I struggle with is the ability to focus on one thing at a time. I have struggled with this quality as far back as I can remember. My mind is always racing and trying to complete more than more thing at a time.…

“To See Who Was Best on the Plantation: Enslaved Fighting Contests and Masculinity in the Antebellum Plantation South”, written by Sergio Lussana, gives us insight into the life of those on Southern plantations from the male slave perspective. In comparison to the amount of information available on the role of women in slavery, there is surprising less information about men. This may be attributed to the fact that slave communities on plantations were matriarchal societies. Nevertheless, Lussana offers valuable information based largely on the accounts of former slave diaries.…

Until now I never really thought much upon how Special Education was formed or carried out. I have had dealing with the Special Education department with my step son so I was already aware of how things went and the procedures of how help was gotten while attending school. I did find it very interesting that it all started with Brown v. Board of Education, a colored girl wanting to attend a white school. While I knew that public schools were free to attend and were open to everyone even the disabled/handicapped I just assumed that the school could turn the disabled away if they were not set for someone of that nature; I was not aware that this was not an option. I also just thought every school took it upon themselves during the planning phase to make sure their facilities would be accessible to all I did not know this was a state mandate. The differences between the Individual with Disabilities Education Act IDEA and the No Child Left Behind NCLB were astonishing to me as I have had ill thoughts all this time toward the bill as I am realizing they are were so misdirected. I do however still believe the teachers use the bill for their advantage to allow students to move forward in the school system when they are clearly not ready. While I am sure that the teachers are up to date with the standards set forth by the state it makes me question if they have had any refresher courses or if they have lost their will to push all students and help them achieve greatness. I am glad that the state upped the standards for teachers to be considered highly qualified and that every teacher has to conform to this standard and not some the ones teaching the Special Education classes.…
