Outcome 1 Understand what is required for competence in own work role
1.1. Describe the duties and responsibilities of own role

I have worked with my current employer for one year’s. I work with clients ill, old and disabled . My current job role is as a ‘care assistant’. I am responsible for providing support to the service user’s, which includes:
-Personal care, assisting with meal preparation, assisting with medication, assisting with meal planning, and maintaining records for service delivered.
-I received an induction training course when I first joined the company, which provided specialised training relating to the learning disability sector. I receive regular supervision with my line manager, where I can discuss any problems, and get support. I can also request training, and my manager can highlight areas where she thinks I would benefit from further training in.
- I attend regular refresher courses in training, so that I am up to date with the current standards required for my role.
-I treat all service users with respect and dignity, and my work practices reflect and promote equal opportunities. I have read, and understand my Company’s policies and procedures, and I am aware of what to do in most circumstances, and the correct reporting/recording procedures to follow.
-I always work in a professional manner, and ensure all service user information is kept up to date, and confidential.”
-I help clean clients who are unable to do so themselves. Aiding them with showers, baths and daily washings .
-I help clients shave or I do this for them. It is also my responsibility to inspect a client’s clothes and ensure that they are kept clean and sanitary.
- As a care assistant also help patients in the bathroom, assisting them to and from the toilet, helping them clean themselves or emptying a bedpan if the patient is

    My role now is to give personal care to all the residents. We assist with their mouth care, washing either done in bed or getting out and having a shower or bath and grooming. Some clients have catheter bags, so I have to empty these as well, also, some clients have specific creams they have applied after washing and some have wounds that I need to check making sure that the dressing is clean and tidy, if not then we need to get a nurse to re-do them. I make sure that whilst doing personal care that the client is treated with dignity i.e.- curtains are remained closed and the door is shut. I then assist with dressing the client, some clients can move independently or for those who cannot we use hoists or serita’s- which is a standing hoist. I have to make sure I use the right sling for the individual to hoist them into their wheelchairs or chairs, we also have handling belts for those able to weight bear. Each time you leave a client’s room when you have finished you must dispose of your gloves in the yellow bins provided and wash your hands and make sure any saturated pads are put into an outer bag and into the yellow bins.
