2.1 Explain how children and young people’s development is influenced by a range of the following personal factors.
HEALTH
Health problems are also personal factors, such as Asthma, which will affect the child’s breathing. Children may get breathless taking part in physical activities and will have to use an inhaler to open the airway. This affects their ability to take part in school activities. A childs health will also be affected during pregnancy if the mother is taking drugs or smoking. This could result in premature birth and low birth weight, which can then lead to a slower development rate. If a child is small this can lead to them not being able to do things that other children do e.g. run as fast. It can also lead to bullying.
Health issues can lead to time off school, which affects their friendships and learning. If a child struggles to make friends that affects their self esteem, they can feel lonely and left out.
Asthma influences the life of children physically, emotionally and socially. The most important components of health related quality of life are the effects on, and consequences of asthma on peer relationships (e.g., being bullied), the dependence on medication, shortness of breath, cough, limitations in activities and limitations due to the response on cigarette smoke exposure. Class activities such as, P.E and if the class has a pet, playtime if the child is sensitive to pollen.
A child with health issues often has to miss school due to doctors or hospital appointments this will affect their rate of learning and hinder social interaction.
DISABILITY
A child in a wheelchair or with a serious physical impairment would find it hard to do many activities, particularity those that are physically demanding. Gross motor skills would be at a less developed rate than peers and fine motor skills may be affected if the child had little or no control over their limbs.
