2.2 Explain how children and young peoples development is influenced by a range of external factors.
Lack of finances - economic factor (parents may be unemployed) - The child will miss out on additional opportunities by not being able to attend after school activities such as swimming/music lessons, sports activities (tennis, football, gymnastics) or extra tuition. – Affecting social, emotional, physical, intellectual development.

Inadequate housing poverty - Poor housing conditions may affect the child’s health and chances of developing through play if they live in a small over crowded house. The house may have damp (mould) not enough finances to provide adequate heating in the winter months, which will affect the child’s health. Lack of or unsuitable furniture/equipment - The child may not have a proper bed or blankets this will affect the child’s health if they cannot get enough rest/sleep, no safety equipment for babies/young children – stair gate, plug socket covers etc… which could cause the baby/child to have accidents or come to physical harm.

Community social factor – Living in built up Inner city areas where there is antisocial or challenging behaviour within the community – parents may feel it is unsafe for their child to play in the community, the child may become involved through peer pressure to join the group/gang. There may not be sufficient local facilities for the parent to participate in activities with their child. The social infrastructure maybe lacking .e.g. play group’s, playgrounds, community halls where after school clubs are held.

Diet personal choices - Lack of finance may mean that the child is not being provided with a sufficiently healthy nutritional diet. Low income families may buy foods that are a lot cheaper such as processed foods, these foods have higher levels of fat, salt and sugar – this can lead to poor concentration, lack of energy, obesity and many health problems.

Poverty can result from low income, unemployment, parental separation, illness or disability, addictions or criminal activities, all of which can lead to children suffering from malnutrition or poor diet as a result of not being able to afford quality food, which could result in lack of concentration or poor performance in school. They could suffer from other health related issues, which could limit opportunities and influence the child's outcome in life. They could get bullied as a result of their clothing or because they do not have the latest must have accessories. Secondly, the impact on poverty can have negative effects on a child’s life in health. Professor Robert Bradley says studies have demonstrated that poverty is associated with higher rates of poor health and chronic health conditions in children. When children experience poverty it not only affect them when they are young, it effects them in adulthood as well. Data from the national longitudinal survey of children and youth, children living in low-income families are more likely to have emotional and behavioral problems than other children. Statistics show that poor children are at risk for low birth weight, asthma, anemia, stunted growth and other health complications compared to non-poor children. Low birth weight shows most in babies from…

Having children grow up in poverty may have many consequences on the children's well-being. Studies have shown that poor children who are born in poor environments are likely to be born with more complications . Because mothers are usually faced with deprivation from resources to help their pregnancies, they are more likely to receive limited required medical attention which can result in having premature babies . If a child is born under the normal weight, they may run the risk of acquiring heightened and constant illnesses that may become long lasting as they get older . Moreover, because of the toxic environments that the children may be exposed to, they run a higher risk of becoming terminally ill, require urgent medical attention, or in some instances it may even be fatal . Some studies have shown that children who live in poor…

One issue I found was that students who have poor nutrition don't perform as well as they could. In the article “Poverty Affects Classroom Engagement”, it talks about how students need oxygen and glucose to function. They react with each other to produce energy for cell function. Students who don't receive proper nutrition will not have healthy cell function, which will often result in them not having enough energy to learn and poor performance in school. Another reason why students could be doing poorly in school because of illness. In the article “Effects of poverty” it states, “They are almost always lacking in nutritious foods, which decreases their bodies’ ability to fight off diseases.” This quote ties back to how not having proper nutrition can lead to disease. The article also states, “...people living in poverty cannot afford appropriate medicines to treat these illnesses.” This explains that even when they do get a disease or hurt they can’t afford medications or equipment to help recover. If students get severely injured or sick and can’t go to the doctor or get medication, they have to miss school. By missing school they are not obtaining information and because of that they are behind, which again, results in doing poorly in poor achievement in school. In the article “10 Facts About Poverty”, it says that children are affected before birth. For example, a child’s parents took drugs while the baby was in the womb, the child would have a higher chance of using or abusing drugs when they are older. This applies to school because if the parents aren’t well-educated, the child might not end up well-educated either. These two examples show how children in poverty/low income can be affected in school if they don’t have proper nutrition or poor…
