As a support worker I and all of my colleagues including other support workers, team leaders and the manager have roles and responsibilities regarding health and safety within the workplace. Our role as a team is to prevent any health or safety hazards to the highest standard that we can so that service users and anyone within the workplace including employees and family members of service users are not at risk from a health and safety issue.
As an employee I have rights and responsibilities for my own well being and that of my other colleagues.
My rights as an employee include;
To be provided with any personal protective equipment and safety equipment free of charge
To stop work and leave your work area, without being disciplines if you have reasonable concerns about your safety
To tell your employer about any health and safety concerns that you have
Not to be disciplined if you contact the Health an Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI), or your local authority, if your employer wont listen to your concerns
Have rest breaks during the working day
To have time off from work
To have annual paid holiday
As an employee I also have responsibilities which include;
To take reasonable care of my own health and safety
If possible to avoid wearing jewellery or loose clothing
Ensure to tie up long hair
Ensure to take reasonable care not to put other people at risk including fellow employees and members of the public at risk by what you do or don’t do I the course of your work
To co-operate with your employer, making sure that you get proper training and you understand and follow the companies health and safety policies
Not to interfere with or misuse anything that’s been provided for your health safety or welfare
To report any injuries, strains or illnesses you suffer as a result of doing your job, your employer may need to change the way you work
