1. To secure the health and safety welfare of all persons at work
2. To protect the general public
3. To control the use handling storage and transport of explosive and highly flammable substances.
4. To control the release of noxious or offensive substances into the atmosphere.
Employer’s duties:
Provide and maintain a safe working environment
Ensure safe access to and from the workplace
Provide and maintain safe machinery equipment and methods of work
Ensure the safe handling transport and storage of all machinery equipment and materials
Provide the employees with the necessary information

As an employer a person who is self employed or something in control of work premises you have legal duties under R.I.D.D.O.R that require you to report and record some work related accidents by the quickest means possible.
You must report: * Deaths * Major injuries * Over 3 day injuries * Injuries to members of the public * Some work related diseases * Dangerous occurrences

The control of substances hazardous to health 1999

The main objective:
Were people use or are exposed to hazardous substances the C.O.S.H.H regulation require

* The assessment of risks involved * The prevention of exposure to risk * Measures taken to adequately control it * Monitoring of the effectiveness of the measures taken

Assessment:
Must be undertaken by employees.
Prevention:
Where harm from substance is likely, the first course of action should be prevention of exposure
Control:
Where the substances has to be worked with because either there is no choice, or because alternatives also present equal risk, exposure must be controlled.
