Unusual Appeal
Introduction This case takes place in a meeting between employees of the Florida Project for Human Justice at the Florida State Prison. Diane Epps a fifty-five-year-old Caucasian woman, Executive director, Joe Moran, the other lead attorney (only African American staff), Cynthia Sanders a petite 28-year-old Caucasian woman, the mitigation investigator, and an accountant, Jose Arnada, a thirty-four Mexican American man; the client, was sentenced the death penalty for a crime that he did not commit. Cynthia, the protagonist, is meeting with Diane and Joe to discuss ways to show Jose is competent to write his own appeal.

The ultimate mission was to protect and sustain the lives of those on death row. Supported through the Federal Indigent Defense Fund, court allocations, and donations from a large private law firm; the agency was primarily devoted to appellate work.
Another internal issue was the rules and procedures for decision making. It is unknown whether Jose killed a clerk inside the pawn shop, by Jose not having the right to be appointed an attorney to represent him on his behalf, due to his circumstances and mental health history. Joe, Diane and Jose Arnada appears to be intelligent, aware of his mental health condition, his human dignity, self-awareness and right to self-determination. By Jose being in solitary confinement, and getting mistreated, it makes him feel selfless, unworthy and degraded as a human being. Diane and Joe believed Jose did not commit the crime he was convicted of and have Jose’s best interest at heart. Joe is the only African-American staff, it touches this case because of his willingness to work outside of his comfort zone with members of other ethnicities. Joe does not have much say so and he works closely with Diane and have held scrupulously to their own ethics.
